    :eek:

    I 've been using Win Xp Professional for a couple of months now and today when I tried to install my ADSL modem (a USB Speedtouch Alcatel provided by BT) my Windows shutdown and when I restarted them and I was waiting to log in I got a Blue screen and a REALLY weird message!!

    More specifically;

    "A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer... "

    After that it prompts me to examine if I have adequate disk space and secondly to change my video adapters.

    Further down in suggests me to "check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS upgrades.."

    The funny thing is that I already have the latest BIOS drivers which worked fine till today...

    The message ends with the folowing:

    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005,0x0F868F093, 0xF8985C10, OxF8985910)

    Would anyone have the same or a similar problem to this? Any ideas about what may have caused it? Finally, could you recommend me a solution to this issue??

    Note: I have already tried to "restore" my system through the Safe Mode but I got the same error again!! and also the same happened when I tried to select the "bring to the last working state..." when Windows was working when rebooting...

    Any help would be very much appreciated...

    Hello Newt!

    No problem whatsoever... I am typing the entire message as is shows in the Blue Screen;

    "A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer

    If this is the first time you 've seen this stop error screen restart ypour computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

    Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

    Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer. press F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe mode.

    Technical information:
    *** STOP: 0x0000007E (0x0000005,0x0F868F093, 0xF8985C10, OxF8985910)

    That's the entire message I get ...

    For your info, I have the latest Bios upgrade and also I've already tried disabling the caching and shadowing... In addition, I have sufficient disk spaces and i even changed my video cards...

    Finally, I already tried recovering unsuccesfully from the "Last Known Good Configuration" and also while in the Safe Mode when trying to recover my System from Start->Accessories->System Tools->System restore ...

    Hope i gave you enough feedback.... If you have any ideas that might help then please drop a line or two... :)

    Thanks... theo01

    Instead of that #$%& junk USB modem, try to get the "Speed Touch Home "..... much better!

    Hello all!!

    I have just managed to resolve the WinXP error message!!!

    Well guys.... I followed your advise and I had a look to the XP web links you recommended and found out (very true) that this problem was caused due to a hardware problem!!!

    Indeed, my soundcard was not sitting on my PCI slot and as soon as I put it in the right place guess what .... Windows loaded without any problem!!!

    :D

    After that I installed my USB modem without any problems without having to update the drivers and logged on the Net...

    At this point I want to thank each and everyone of you for your prompt response and good advice!

    Thanks again!! :) theo01
