Windows XP Pro thinks my Creative cd rw (4224) is merely a cd rom. Accordingly, it functions fine as a cd rom but burning programs tell me a cd burner is not detected. Is there a cure for this problem? Any help or advise would be appreciated greatly!

    no dice

firstly, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, I've already tried that fix and gotten my computer to recognize my burner as a cd rw, but burning applications still tell me I don't have a burner. Ive used the WMP burning software bundled with XP, which consistently tells me I have no recording device, and I've tried Nero, Ashampo, Audio CD Maker, and they simply fail. Curiously, Nero was upon one occasion able to sucessfully burn a one-track CD, but this was one out of about a dozen tries with different cds, software, settings, files, etc. I dont quite understand why I could burn one tiny cd with one program and still have other programs (especially the MS ones) not even recognize my cdrw... I checked the HCL at Microsoft and my Creative drive isnt listed for XP... Is there any hope? Is there a way to run my old burner with older drivers from 98 or nt? Is it time to get a new burner? Might there be updates available in the future to fix this? thanks again,
    George

I was having problems similar to yours until I downloaded the MS "update" having to do with CD writers. I can't remember the name of it, but it showed up on the list when I went to the MS update site for XP. You may as well get it and see if it helps. After all, the writer can't not work more than it doesn't work now. ;)

(Of course, as with all Windows updates, it's wise to create a restore point before you proceed.)
