Recently my computer was infected by the 'Spy Sheriff' hack/virus etc..I followed this guide at this website: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=22402&pid=130094&st=0&#entry130094

Now - I was told to complete Point 15 and onwards, to which I did and rebooted the computer.

But now, when the logging screen comes on (When you chose a user to log on as) - the user names don't even come up, it stays on the Blue/Dark Blue splash screen with the little windows logo and the writing 'Windows is starting up..' - it freezes at that and nothing else happens.

Any ideas on how to solve this would be very much appreciated!

I am having a similar problem as Schmit89. I am working on a friends Compaq and I don't know if he has any bugs in it but when starting up I get the same screen with the exception that it doesn't state "windows is starting up ". Also, I tried to reset to last known working config as well as tried to go to safe mode and every time I end up on that same blue/dk blue screen and it just hangs there. I will be getting his Compaq software tonight so let me know what I might be able to do.

    Later. Pepse.

If possible start in safe mode. Otherwise you may have to find your XP CD. Boot off the XP install CD. Select that you want to recover a previous Windows install.
Use the command "chkdsk /r" sometimes viruses will knock some security settings for a loop.

The only other thing I can suggest is to use BART PE to recover your files and start from scratch.
