After a clean install, where I formatted the partition that had windows 2k pro with a slow format (not a quick format), when my machine reboots it comes up with the option to start either WinXPpro or Win2kpro. There were two other small "non partitioned" areas on the drive. I don't think I can still start W2Kpro, but there is obviously something still on there that offers me the chance to start either OS.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS! :)

Using a Win9x boot floppy, boot to it and at the A:\> prompt, type, fdisk /mbr, (Enter), and try your install again. ;)

May not have to get that drastic. If XP will start, you just have to remove the now-dead entry for 2K from your boot.ini file.

As to the small partitions - if they are around 10Mb or less, ignore em. Not completely up on the hardware stuff but those are little sections the drive sorta keeps in case it wants to do stuff. Sorry for being so technical but hardware ain't my thing. :D

Boot.ini is a text file located usually in c:\ and will be hidden so hard to find. Just unhide stuff in c:\ and probably then need to set the file to allow edits. Then you can remove the line(s) that point to 2K. Careful though because if you mess up the file, your PC won't boot until the file is fixed.
