I have just added winxe to my network and it works slightly different from win98/2k. My old win98 accessed outlook from my 2k perfectly. Now I can see the folders but I can't seem to make the 2k personal folders the default folders and I can't seem to find where the default folders are set. When I right click on properties of the first set of personal folders, the location and browse button is set in stone. So I have to click on the individual parts of the lower "personal folders" group to see the calendar, contacts, etc. What I am trying to do is make my win2k personal folders the default on my winxp networked computer. Peer-to-peer network. Also, I am having trouble accessing my printer. It seems I have to create a new port and I don't seem to be naming it right. Any help there? I would appreciate it.
One other thing. I just got a wireless router and want to connect it to my old 4th printer cable which is upstairs (my wired router is downstairs) so the laptops will have more range from the computer. Do I have to configure it again or will it just work if I plug it in? My new winxp has wireless centrino built in. It also has a wide screen which is the best screen I have ever seen on a laptop (Compaq). If you haven't seen it, take a look.

    thanks

    " .. I can't seem to make the 2k personal folders the default folders .. "
Other than to suggest you make sure you are logged on with an account that has admin rights, not sure about this one and only OE at home to play with. Outlook at work runs from Exchange Server so may be different but if you don't have a solution, I'll look around some tomorrow.

"..Also, I am having trouble accessing my printer. It seems I have to create a new port and I don't seem to be naming it right.. "
Need more info. If you are trying to connect to a shared printer on another PC you'll need one approach. But the "new port" thing sounds like you have a printer that has a NIC in it or runs from a dedicated print server device.

" .. I just got a wireless router and want to connect it to my old 4th printer cable which is upstairs ... "
I have no idea what this means. Details please.

I am really spacey ... sorry for the confusion.

I meant to say that I am piggy-backing my wireless router to the my wired router that is in the basement. The current connection from my laptop on the first floor will go into the wireless router which connects to the wired router in the basement. I need to have the wireless antenna on the first floor with the laptops.
But the cable modem needs to connect near it's source to the wired router in the basement so that the connection is strong enough to serve all the computers. Don't know if I made that clear.

I have contacted HP about the printer. They helped me before.
Problem is I can't seem to be able to load the driver from the install disk inside the "add printer" wizard. The disk wants to auto install but when I try to do that, it demands a parallel port or a usb port ... but I'm using a lan connection ... so I'm confused as to how I can install the printer.

Thanks for trying, newt. Still haven't solved the Outlook problem.
Funny ... it worked perfectly with Win98. I wonder if it's because I'm using Office 2000 instead of officeXP?

The Printer - assuming the printer is physically attached to the W2K system and that it will run using the same drivers, you actually have less work to do that with 9X/ME. The NT systems (NT4/2K/XP) are designed to use the drivers loaded on the PC that hosts the printer. No need to install any on the other PCs.

So you should be able to go to add printer and specify network printer then point to the shared printer and be good to go. To avoid even having to search as part of the setup you can specify the printer. For example, if the 2K PC (with printer attached) is named 2K and the printer is shared as HP, in the line for the device just put in \\2K\HP

If there are specific XP drivers, then a tweak to the "sharing" part on 2K will allow you to specify other operating systems that will use the printer and the location of proper drivers.

Folder Location for MS Outlook - Exchange Server (here at work) operates too differently than a peer workgroup would so can't play with it to get specific answers for you. If necessary, I can load Outlook at home (have a pair of XP-pro machines on a peer network) and figure it out) but meanwhile, your problem could be a permissions issue.

I suspect that the XP username you log on with will need to be part of the administrator group on the 2K PC for this to work. At least worth a try but if it fails, let me know and I will play with the other. Probably be the weekend though.

Router Connection - if I read you correctly and you need the wireless router upstairs and your wired one downstairs then it becomes a matter of how you want to connect the routers. A patch cable would work unless the run is too long. Otherwise you probably need some sort of wireless access point plugged into the wired router. Maybe even place the wireless router between the PC upstairs and the router downstairs.

Just letting you know about a printer problem that was solved in a ridiculous way.

My xp couldn't access the HP Laserjet 1000 attached to a win98
desktop computer. I downloaded the xp driver and I installed it properly. I could see it in my printers on the xp. But when I tried to print to it, it wouldn't work. You should have seen all the solutions from HP ... disabling bi-directional, etc. etc. five pages worth. Finally I hired someone to come to the house and he told me that on a network, win98 won't share the printers if there is a space in the name (HP Laserjet 1000). So I uninstalled the printer and went looking for it again. Win98 wanted to call it HP
so I did too. I installed it as HP on the xp and it worked.

That little piece of information cost me 100 bucks. (He fixed other things as well). Problem with all these windows upgrades is that they all work differently.

For those of you who don't know this little fact, it's handy.
