My friend is on WinMX, and it's been giving her problems. She'd rather not switch because it has the selection of songs she prefers.

The problem is that when she searches for a song, it says, "Waiting for results..." but none ever come up. I checked, and it says that she is connected to the WinMX server. Her internet server is the New York University server. What might be wrong with the connection? Are universities giving file-sharers a hard time? Why won't WinMX retrieve any song files for her to download?

    - What version?
    - What OS does she run?
    - How does she connect?
    - Stand-alone PC or home/small network of some sort
    - Did the problem start suddenly after she'd been having good luck?

    Besides Newt's questions,

    - Has she tried changing ports?
    - Has she tried passive mode?

You might also try this newsgroup for Pros on this program:

You said that she's on a university Server ... usually school, universities and offices have a tendency to give p2p programs a hard time.

Is she trying to connect to win mx behind a firewall or maybe from a proxy server?

For example from my work pc we are not allowed to use such p2p programs, becuase they restrict us from using a lot of ports. However, if she's patient and she likes configuring here and there, she might be able to get it to work.

However, if the university are stressing the point not to use such programs, beware of the configs u make becuase it's easy for them to identify who is connecting to what.

Madmick - with all these questions (and all are stuff we'll need to help out), may be easier to get your friend to post here directly.

    Her Info

    Version: 3.31
    OS: Windows XP
Connection: Nic Ethernet Card, New York University Resnet T1 Server (is that what you're looking for?)
    Computer Type: Standalone PC

I emailed my friend this site. She should be able to take it from here. Her problem is definitely over my head.
