Hello to all! The list of available columns to enable in the Column Settings Dialog (View>Choose Columns) in my Windows Explorer is very short, offering only Name, Size, Type, Modified and Attributes. The list used to offer a lot more choices although I can't name them. I've searched BBS and googled with no success. I've also been unable to perform a System Restore, both available points were "unsuccessful ". I was trying out a few small programs to see if I could list folder size, so I'm sure I did this to myself. Virus protection is enabled, so is anti-malware. Is this a setting that I need to re-configure?

    Hi,

Sorry for the lack of response, but Windows ME was such a disaster OS, I doubt anyone is still using it.

    Feel like the Maytag repairman

Thanks for checking in Arie. Why anyone would still be using ME is worth a thread by itself. I can only say that aside from the dearth of programs for it, it's not been as bad as it's reputation. I use XP on our main PC, my wife checks her e-mail etc on ME (which shares a dual-boot with Ubuntu). It's been fun finding programs for it. Firefox, Avast, Kerio and lots of useful small utils make it look and run great.

    Choose Columns in WinME explorer.exe

jamon: It seems you must Use Windows classic desktop and folders to have
the option and you must choose Folders from the Standard Buttons toolbar before
View will show the Choose Columns option.

There are 25 boxes that can be checked to customize the view for a given folder.
The order and column width can also be changed.

I tried checking the "Picture taken on" box but could not pick up that string in the
registry. Only that one folder was changed, and no reboot required to add or delete.

Only explorer.exe is running. Maybe somebody can say if it is possible to use
dependency walker to find out how explorer changes the columns? I have an ME
machine that is working but need some suggestions for where to look.

Arie: You might be surprised at how many ME machines are still in use. I know one
lady who has been using a Dell 4100 with a PIII 800MHz and 128MB RAM since
September of 2000. Exceptionally reliable, probably because she mostly uses the
software that came with it. She boots up once a day to check e-mail, get stock quotes
and order Netflix DVD's. No firewall or anti-spyware, but since she only accesses the
internet through AOL 5.0 she has never had a virus or malware infection.

I'm sure. We had 306 WinME users visiting last month.... that's 0.04% of our total visitors for the month..

Windows 98 was used by 3,530 people (0.50%).

    Windows Millenium

Interesting. I'm beginning to like old ME machines because they
    handle USB sticks better.

    Choose Columns in WinMe

jamon: if you right click on the blank header to the right
of "Modified" the same list of 25 choices should pop up.
Does this still work on your system?

Antik - good to hear from you! Classic folders has been my preferred setting all along as has folder view. And a right-click on the blank header to the right of "modified" still produces a list of only 5 choices. Fun, hey? I hope I mentioned in my post that I've probably done this to myself by trying tiny apps that were supposed to show a folder size column. FWIW, none of the ones I tried worked very well. Ah well, pretty well everything else works fine, I may just learn to live with it. Thanks again, nice chatting with you both.
