Anyone know which Asus DiehardBIOS motherboards are compatible with Windows 98 OS? Been on their website for hours now and still not seeing anything!

BIOS isn't really an issue for the OS, what problems are you having/expecting?

Any modern motherboard can handle Win98, but the question really is - Can Win98 handle todays board ? Where would you get the drivers ?

In other words: You most likely will not be able to find a new (modern) motherboard that is compatible with Windows 98.

    Not sure, but...

from what the others are saying, I think problems are headed my way.Trying to design custom build PC that will run all the operating systems I want to try out (XP Pro, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 98, and various Linux distros). Think the only sticking point is the Windows 98. Any assistance/advice is welcomed.

Better go the virtual way. Load any modern OS [Windows/Linux] you are comfortable with & then install Oracle VirtualBox. Now you can install almost ALL the OSes including Win98/95/Linux.

    I am aware of this...

I only mentioned Asus DiehardBIOS motherboards as this is the only sort I will buy (well, that and Gigabyte DualBIOS ones). What I understand, there seems to be some sort of support issue with Windows 98 and current motherboards. Been told I must pick older motherboards for Windows 98. In other words, I'm trying to find out if any Asus DiehardBIOS motherboards will run Windows 98, or if these are too recent.

    Exactly!

So are Asus DiehardBIOS motherboards too "modern" ? And what is too modern? How far back do I have to go by way of CPU, & motherboard/chipset, to run Windows 98? I'm assuming I must kiss goodbye my first choice CPU: AMD Phenom II x6 1075T...so what is the best old-tech I can hope for?

As rsinfo stated... go the virtual way. Otherwise I think you'll have to resort to buying old equipment. Windows 9x has been DEAD since 2006.

Now maybe if you search hard enough you'll find ne equipment compatible with Windows 98... but I doubt it.

Thanks, but not interested in virtual stuff.

My question is how "old" are we talking about for hardware? What is the best legacy hardware (AMD cpu & compatible motherboard) that will run Windows 98?

Hmm, I think the answer is in the OS (what's it now 2011?).

Seriously, If you do have old hardware hanging around then sure build a 9x box. If you want to take the risk in building a new 98 system you'll probably get away with it (my opinion but most others it appear disagree).

By far the best solution offered is the virtual box, and that's the route I would go.
