I have a PII with 396MB of ram. 12GB HD. When I install windows2000 pro the install goes with no problems. After install I get the login screen. I log into the pc and the menu bar flashes at the bottom and the screen goes blank. The screen is blue like a windows background only there are no icons. I have tried two other video cards and this does not fix the problem. I then took windows2000 off and installed win98 and the pc works fine.

    Any ideas

845 - this is most odd. A WAG and a couple of suggestions.

To deal with the possiblilty that you picked up an MBR virus at some point, I'd completely wipe the drive (either a program from the disk maker or one of the freebees on the internet but something that will completely slick the thing including sector zero.

Then a clean install of 2K - and NTFS would be my choice for the file system.

Might be good as well to go into the BIOS and change the Plug & Pray settings from whatever they are now. If on, turn off. If off, turn on.

And remove all cards except video. Plan to add them back later when the system is working.

Also, cut back to one memory stick rather than the (3?) you have in now. Simple enough to test each stick while you still have 98 on the box. After the reinstall, if all is well, you can add the sticks back in one at a time.

If you do all of this and it is still behaving the same way, post back while you still have the 2K load on there and the minimal hardware.

    Hi 845

    Hello Newt

845 wish you could have contacted us before you reinstalled 98!

Did you try coming up in safe mode? I would have liked to have known what the event logs said if you could have!

Newt is a Pro and he is as always right on! Course he is an even better Carp fisherman! Hee Hee!

If it does the same this time try safe mode and see if we can get at the event logs!

    Mike

I did use a hard drive wipe utility. I never thought about putting windows 2000 back on.
I did try to start the pc in safe mode. I could not get it to go there. Today I will try a new install on 2000 and I'll report back what I find. I will used the suggestions you mentioned.

    Well all right!!!

If you have a 3rd stick (and for the original numbers you probably do) it ain't good probably.

Mike - your check is in the mail. Keep up the kudos. I may decide to change jobs one day and will point to your posts in my rezumeee. :D
