Whenever I click Start/Log off or Restart or Shut Down, the screen goes to Logging Off, and then just hangs up there. I've let it set for two hours and finally have to use the turn off switch.

Does anyone know why it won't log off anymore?

    I forgot to add:
    Compaq Presario SR1838NX
    Windows XP MediaCenter Edition 2005
    Purchased in 2006
HP gave several suggestions, but none of them worked
Even Safe Mode does not function properly so I can't restore to an earlier time.

Hi mickey918. Also try shutting down all backround programs that are running in the system tray in the taskbar and then attempt to shut the computer down. Does it still hang? Try booting into Safe Mode and try shutting down the computer from there. Try enabling verbose Vs normal status messages so you can get a better idea of what is stopping your computer from shutting down correctly, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325376. ;)
