    Every time I try to install Windows XP it stops at "Setup is loading files(Kernel
    Debugger DLL) ". I've done this 5 times,waiting about 20 to 30 minutes each time.The installation will not go any further. I tried installing Windows 98, just to see if it was the CD. Windows 98 stopped at.............................
    "Standard Mode: Fault outside of MS-DOS Extender.
    EC=0000 CS=040F IP=74D0 AX=0000 BX=040F CX=FFB0 DX=040F
    SI=2ABA DI=3706 BP=0FB0 DS=0417 ES=0407 SS=027F SP=0F94
    Please remove any floppy disks from your drives and press any key to restart your system ". I tried scandisk on drive C and it stopped at the 11th or 12th
    cluster and would'nt go any further. I'm really stumped hear. Would appreciat
    any help out there. :(

    Thanks, Lennie

    Are you trying to install to a disk which already has an OS installed or is this a new disk? Clean install or upgrade?

    It could be a disk problem or possibly a memory problem - I can't interpret the Win98 error message.

    You can test your memory with Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool. If that is OK and you are hapy to try a format of the drive (all data wil be lost) boot from a Win98/Me start up disk and format the drive. If you need to rid the disk of partitions use FDISK

    Lennie,
    Not sure you're having the same problem as I am/was but it sounds familiar. Check out my post and responses in the WIN 98 section under "clean install on formatted hard drive" a few days ago. I've been installing a Windows XP UPDATE on a new, clean drive. Needed WIN 98 to validate a previous version of Windows. Not sure what went wrong but ended up going back to a LOW LEVEL FORMAT (all zeros on the whole drive) using Seagate's DiscWizard for DOS tools. You can download it from their website if you have a working computer, which I suppose you must have as you are posting here.

    Seems something in the partitioning and formatting has confused both WIN 98 and WIN XP. I am trying to use FAT 32 file system for both 98 & XP rather than XP's NTFS file system as I can''t use NTFS for WIN98

    Some posters suggested "work arounds" that seemed like good ideas, and there are some good articles on the Microsoft Windows XP support section on installing WIN XP under various different scenarios.

    As PeteC indicated, it also depends on whether you are using an UPGRADE or a FULL version of XP.

    Good luck and let us know what works for you.
