    Hi,

I got a computer that use to run in Windows 98 SE. It has the gfx card Prolink MVGA 1740AG. Now, i reformatted it and installed both Windows 98 SE and Windows XP Pro. However, now it have a problem, direct X doesn't seem to run in that computer. I found a driver for this graphics card that is only compatible for Windows 98, but when i installed it, direct X still fails to work. It cannot even install in Windows XP. Before i reformatted this computer, direct X CAN work. I hope someone can help. Thank you!

    Hi

You will probably be asked: what error messages do you get or when does it "jam up "?

Win XP installs DirectX 9.0 in the original install. Did you have trouble there?

Could your copy of DirectX be corrupt? Are you downloading it from MS?

Have you installed the motherboard/chipset drivers?

Try reseating the video card then removing the drivers in Device Manager and rebooting.

Actually Matt, XP original ships with DirectX 8.1. But I think without an updated graphics driver, DX may have problems working properly in XP, although it should have installed correctly, just some features disabled.

    Greatguy,
You could try downloading DX 9.0x. Interesting I couldn't find anything on the prolink card.
    Is the model # correct?
Using the standard XP driver, what refresh rate and screen resolution/color quality are you using.
If the card and monitor supports it you probably should have 1024x768 (for 17" monitor) 32 bit (or 16 bit) colour and 85Hz refresh rate.

Check the Dx diagnostics by entering dxdiag in the start menu Run command. From the Dx applet (if Dx IS installed?) you can check the installed version and under Display you can enable some features if your card supports them.

A new graphics card may be the way to go? Depending on your system specs, a fairly low end card would be recommended.

    I found the Prolink drivers:
    http://www.prolink.com.tw/english/download/3dvga.htm
or are these the ones you already have? They don't specify which version of Windows.

Suggest you boot into Safe Mode and remove any old drivers. Look in Add/Remove programs for anything related to video, then anything listed in Device Manager. Reboot into normal Windows and install the new ones.

Along with what Paul is saying, it sounds to me like DirectX could not access the features of the card and this would be because the drivers are not loaded properly.
