XP did not support USB devices until Service Pack 1.
Install Service Pack 2, ignoring SP1.

Did you install the chipset drivers for the motherboard?

    Hello upsguy,

Not clear on the question. Do they show up in My Computer or in Disk Mangement but can't be read? Or not show up at all?

To access Disk Mangement: Right click My Computer > Manage > Left panel under Storage > Disk Management.

    Regards - Charles

    Hello upsguy,
I had the very same problem where my USB devices didn't work and my sound didn't work on my Windows XP Service Pack 2 computer. The devices also didn't show up in device manager. I also already had all the latest windows updates and I had the latest drivers for my computer. It was as though my computer didn't recognize any external devices that I plugged into it. :(

So you are wondering how did I solve the problem? Well it was actually very simple. ;) I ended up accessing the BIOS and under integrated Peripherals it showed a setting for disabling/enabling USB devices and the sound. I enabled the options, closed the BIOS and restarted my computer. After I logged on everything was back to normal and all my USB devices worked. :) BTW I posted a thread on this problem that will give you more information on exactly how I solved this issue. Here is the link.

Look in the BIOS again and under Integrated Peripherals you should see your sound device underneath where you enabled the USB device. So under Integrated Perpherals your sound device should be right under your USB device. :D

I am glad that you were able to re enable your USB device in the BIOS. :)

I have the same issue. I installed XP with SP2 and have no on board rear USB Ports. The USB PCI card is fine along with the front 2 header usb ports. I downloaded latest driver from Epox and still no rear usb port. I checked the bios and it looked fine. the ports may just be bad on my system bd.

There are some misconceptions in this thread.

First of all WinXP supported USB 1.1. It did not support USB 2.0 until SP1.

Second you should not rely on WinXP to load the correct drivers for your motherboard. Install the motherboard manufacturer's updated chipset and other drivers for your devices to function correctly.

On my Epox board I updated the Via 4-in-1 drivers and have had no USB issues since. I also updated my Nvidia graphics and Realtek audio drivers from the manufacturers to resolve issues with WinXP's drivers.

Thank you. I did not make that clear.

One thought for the problem is to get an enumeration of what XP believes are installed USB devices. Use USBView, freeware from Nirsoft, to see what XP recognizes: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
