i have a HP Pavilion computer with windows XP home an AMD athlon 1700 mhz & lucent win modem. i have tried to download updates form windows update site off & on since 1-16-03 with no luck. Windows will come up with a list of critical updates & service packs. i download them in bulk &/or 1 @ a time & then they will start to install & then i get a screen that states, "No Updates Were Installed, the following items failed to install etc ". or" the software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to verify its compatibility with Windows XP. Tell me why this testing is important. this software will not be installed ". these downloads were all from the windows update site why have they not passed the windows logo? when i try to download service pack 1 only, i get a dialog box message stating "service pack 1 setup error. Setup could not verify the integrity of the file update.inf make sure cryptographic service is running on this computer ". what & how do i find out about getting file update.inf & what is cryptographic service is? as a result i don't have most security or XP patches.:) I would appreciate it very much if anyone could help me; thanks

Hi Warren - and welcome to the Board :)

Cryptographic Services basically confirm signatures of Windows files and are required for Windows Update to function in manual and automatic mode. They are also required to install Service Pack 1 unified updates and DirectX 9.

The default setting is 'Automatic' - for both flavours of XP.

To check your setting on this :

Right click on My Computer icon > Manage > Services and Applications > Services.

In the RH pane scroll down to Cryptographic Services - Start Up type should be Automatic and the previous column should indicate 'Started'

If the setting is not Automatic double click on the entry and select automatic in the start up drop down list. Close Computer Management.

The downloads from Windows Update have all passed the Windows Logo test - after all they were written by MS, but your PC is unable to read the digital signature to confirm this as crypyographic services appears not to be functioning.

    Hi Pete C :)
Thank you very much for your information, I am very sorry I was so long in replying, but I didn't have time to reply until today. My Cryptographic Services was on "automatic" then I clicked a button to install & tried to download again with the same results.

A couple of days ago I found another site by accident that was titled "Updates fail to install ". it stated "in most cases a corrupted CatRoot2 folder causes this. You can fix this by renaming the \Windows\System32\CatRoot2 folder to CatRootOLD ". Then I went to Windows update again & tried for 1 update & it wow it worked. I then tried for 2 & it worked also. So today i tried for 9 & it took hours as I am on a modem & it takes a while.

Again Pete thank you again foryour info which I have saved in a file, so if someone i know has the problem maybe i can help. I also thought you might be able to use the other solution also some time
    Warren :)

    Hi Warren,

Glad to hear you got it sorted - thanks for posting back :)

The catroot corruption was to have been the followup suggestion, but the message you received seemed specific to crypto.. services.
