I just reinstalled windows xp, after formatting my hard drive, and i started to download the updates from microsoft.com. There was this one update, called Windows XP Service Pack 1 (Express)*installed separately, that had to be installed separately from the other updates. After i installed it, it rebooted and my display was just a mess. The text in all the windows is all pixelated and messy, it just looks like ****. Im almost positive that the update caused this and i was wondering if somebody could tell me how to fix this? Is this update is that critical to my system(does it do something important like update security or does it just update internet explorer and outlook and that stuff?).im worried that if i reformat and dont download it, my update manager thing will sneak it in there and then i'll be back where i started from.

Look in Device manager and see what display adapter you have. It probably just needs the driver reinstalled.

You could try just right-clicking the present driver and updating it.

You might also check the display applet. It could be something as simple as a changed resolution setting.

Yes, Service Pack 1 is something you need. Did you have your anti-virus program running when you downloaded and installed it? That seems to create problems for a lot of people.

If you want to try it again, go to Control Panel>Add Remove Programs, remove the Service Pack. Then turn off your AV program and install it again.
