Windows XP suddenly so slow, that it is impossible to work with.

Hey all - I am so glad I found this forum!! My computer is very sick :-(

Here is what happened:

About 2 days ago all of a sudden (while performing regular internet activities, no program installations), it started acting weird. The mouse pointer got stuck at the left, then at the right edge of the screen, and so I had to restart. No mouse pointer problem anymore, but ever since that restart the computer processes became extremely, impossibly slow.

One example. Installing Norton AntiVirus took me about 12 hours. Opening IE took about 15 minutes (I don't normally use it).
Firefox doesn't even load (I do see the Firefox process appear in Task Manager, but no actual window opens even if I wait for hours).
Other programs do not load either, for example I dared try Winamp as well.
But if a program does finally load it behaves fine, not slow (for example to save files, select menu options etc.)

The actual CPU usage is never bad. It is between 3%-30% with several programs opened. Even without opening any other programs and after ending all unnecessary processes in task manager, loading a program opens equally slow (and as I mentioned some do not open at all).

Windows Startup is not slow until I initiate logging the user in. Then it takes about 10-15 minutes to fully log me in.

Logging out & closing programs is very very slow too.

Safe Mode runs fine, not slow at all.

What I did:

- I scanned with Ad-Aware. Found tracking cookies and deleted them all.
- I scanned with AOL's Kaspersky anti-virus thing. Did not find anything.
- I scanned with Norton Security Scan. Found a couple of spyware and 6 trojan instances.
-Downloaded & installed Norton AntiVirus and performed a full scan again. It found the same files again and I quarantined them. Current status on these files in Norton's system history is "resolved ".
- I deleted/disabled everything i thought was unnecessary from the Startup tasks and Windows Registry, including the sketchy wnex7do.exe located in my Windows/system32 directory.

If I try to start the computer again in normal mode, it is just as slow as before.
Safe mode is still fine.

Well everyone my issue is fixed \/

What helped is doing a physical hardware disk check and a file check of my entire system. It found some file or disk error and it fixed itself, and now everything is fine!

How to do this? All is described in this article:

So if you think you might have a virus and yet a virus scan/removal doesn't help, try this too!

I'm happy to hear your problems seem to be resolved, however I do see at the very least some remnants of infection in your log that should be removed. I recommend you download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) and save it to your desktop.

• Close all applications and windows.
• Double click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
• When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.

Post the contents of main.txt and we'll see what else might need attention.
