I have a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop with Windows XP and BIOS Revision A16.

When I turn on the computer, the Dell startup logo comes up but then a message occurs, saying that windows did not start successfully, and I am given several options of configurations to choose, including the last good configuration. If I let the countdown run out on this screen, the Windows XP logo comes up, but this then goes to a blue screen that tells me "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. An attempt was made to write to read-only memory." It suggests that I disable BIOS memory options such as caching and shadowing, and use Safe Mode to remove or disable components. At the bottom of the screen, the follow tech information is listed:

    *** STOP: 0x000000BE (0xAC30BFA9, 0x0A039860, 0xF89554D4, 0X0000000E)

I was able to access the BIOS menu, but I didn't find any reference to caching and shadowing options, or even an option to just restore the computer to factory settings. When I tried to select the Safe Mode on the initial configuration screen, I had scrolling file names come up across the screen; they all begin with:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS and then a file name.

From this, it takes me back to the blue screen described above.

How can I possibly fix this?? I cannot even get past the blue screen to my desktop or any programs to remove them! (Windows XP does not start up at all, I am stuck at the blue screen.)

It would be useful if we had the file name.

There are about twenty or more different file names that scroll down, all ending in ".sys ". They include: Ntfs.sys, NDIS.sys, Mup.sys, and agp440.sys.

Oops, sorry, didn't notice you where talking about starting in safe mode...

Follow these instructions to post a Dump Data Log.

If you do not have a dump, ensure that your machine is configured to write out a dump by following the directions from microsoft
