Does anyone know if the forthcoming full version (not beta) of SP2
can be directly installed on a XP pro + SP1a OS which has the full updates? Or, if not, what would need to be done? And would Java VM have to be re-installed?

The final version should be one that you can just install. Hopefully it won't break anything.

That being said, I don't think I'd rush to be among the first to load it. Wait a couple of weeks and watch the forums for comments & possible problems.

Let the Ghost Users (and users of other Imaging Software) be the guinea-pigs!

I'll probably start by installing SP2 on top of it all. After some time, I'll restore Image #1 of a clean XP (without SP1(a), any updates or anything else) and install SP2 "clean" to see if there is any difference.

All of the above ...... ...... if time permits.
