I have 2 computers that have been working perfectally for some time now. My wife said she clicked on something asking for an update and she does not remember what it was. Now her computer will not boot normally, to safe mode, safe mode with networking or to the c prompt. anyone know how to get the operating system repaired. I have all data backed up so I am not worried about that. I just need help getting it to boot.

Thanks for the response Mickzer. I have tried the recovery as your answer suggested. It did not work the first and the second time. I attempted to install windows in the same directory and received an error. I am going to try once more than I will repartition and go with a new install.
    Thanks again.

Thanks but that was the same as Mickzer and I have tried it 3 times and still can't boot. I may have to delete the partition and start fresh and just reload the backup data from the restore computer location over our home network.

Can you get to the Recovery Console by pressing R the first time it comes up. Then at the prompt type: chkdsk /r
    Worth a try.

Mickzer, I guess I am too impatient. I am reformatting the drive as we communicate. I have all the programs and data. Just seems like a waste of a day putting it all back. My wife and her sister run a small business with that computer. I think the next time I have it all working I will just clone the drive. This is not the first time they have crashed their computers.

    Thanks again

Well, I reformatted NTFS, reinstalled XP, then upgraded to SP3 and guess what. SP3 crashed the computer again. So I reformatted NTFS again, reinstalled XP, and upgraded to SP2. So it is working again for now. What is with SP3? Anyone else have an SP3 problem?

Thank Mickzer, that is the file I d/l'd and burned. I will try it again. I sure hope it does not mess things up. Is there a way to restore from a restore point from the command prompt? I have another question but it should probably go some ware else. I use Live Onecare and want to restore the data files that were wiped with the reload. They are on the network on another PC D drive but restore does not see them when I click restore. They are in D:\Windows OneCare Backup\BARLON\2007\Catalogs and Files. How do I get restore to see them?

    Answer to first question:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449
    Don't know about second, sorry.
EDIT: Have you got an AMD processor?
    From another forum(Thanks glc)

This sounds like the AMD bug.

"If you have an AMD processor, you need to do this:

Boot with a Windows XP CD and use the recovery console - type the following command at the C prompt:

    disable intelppm

    :)

It's certainly mentioned on the BBS and I think I had first notice of it from Windows Secrets newsletter.

Ok, this looks like I am getting on track. The processor is AMD e6600. So when do I instll this fix? before I install sp3 or after? Because after I have no prompt to do anything just a circular boot and reboot. Never get to an operating system.

It's not very clear when to apply it but it does say this at the start:

"You upgrade a computer that uses a processor other than an Intel processor to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or to Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3). Then, you restart the computer. "

So I think you can do it after installing SP3.

    Sorry just re-read your post.
Do you mean you can not get to Safe Mode(Method 1) AND you can not boot using your XP CD(Method 2)

    mickzer.

Yes I have no control of anything after the SP3 Upgrade. Just a circular boot sequence. No safe, safe with net, no safe prompt, no windows normal. I a virtually *******. Now have to start over with formating the drive and reinstalling xp and SP2 which works just fine.

Well, I think you've answered your own question then. You have to apply the hotfix after SP2 and before SP3.
Let's hope it does the job this time,eh.
