Windows xp slowdown

Symptoms: When I click on a page, the page will appear without hesitation followed by my timer coming up after the page has displayed. The timer will change back to the arrow, but I cannot move around the page for another 6-7 seconds afterwards.

system: HP pavilion 510n, 256 ram, windows xp, mcafee vs, mcafee guardian, pop up stopper. Internet cookies are cleared, history cleared, temporary internet files, cleared, defrag, etc.

Have you scanned for spyware? If not, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware (you can use them both.) Let whichever one you choose clean up any spyware it finds.

Then get CWShredder and run it (link to the download is near the bottom of the page).

 

I downloaded adware 6 and updated it and ran it. I also downloaded and ran cwshredder. Adware found some stuff but cwshredder didn't.

What do you know about cleaning the registry? What else should I do? Thank you.
