I have Windows XP Pro on my computer and it seems that when I start it up, after I have logged on with any user, it lags for about a minute before I can connect to the Internet (PPPoE) or run any programs what so ever. Also when I shut it down, the whole "Saving your setting" and "Shutting down Windows" seems to take a lot of time too. It stays at that screen for about 2 minutes and the hard drive isnt doing anything, its just there..

    Can anyone help me out?

Whilst I do not have the solution for you you have noticed it is slow connecting to the Internet-therefore I assume there is some problem with your ISP connection and it is slow closing down.

Both issues are very likely interlinked.

During shutdown XP is trying to save your ISP settings and if there is an existing problem with the ISP connection the shutdown will hang...

Virus checking programs that load in memory and check on bootup etc can also slow loadup.

Maybe another user can come up with some suggestions for fixes.

no no, i dont mean 2 minutes to connect to it. i mean it takes 2 minutes before i can acctualy access the shortcut to my connection. I click it and nothing happends or ill try to do just about anything else (open the start menu, run programs) and it just kinda lags for 2 minutes then it just wakes up again and everything just happends at once. know wha i mean?

Stand along computer or do you have several networked together?

Reason I ask - making and breaking network connections can cause this sort of behavior.

Also, check your event logs for entries around start-up and shut-down time and see if you find anything interesting. Check applications, security, and system.

What file system are you using? FAT32 or NTFS?
