I just reformated my old computer for my husband to use. Running Windows XP Prof. When I shut the machine down it still stays on unles I throw the switch on the back of the computer. There must be an easier way. I thought the machine would just go off by itself after I did the start, turn off computer-it doesn't. Please help. Thank you

Go to my control panel /system / advanced/ hardware / device manager
    click the + by computer
See what it says. Does it say ACPI compliant or APM
    If not follow these instructions
    http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article06-453

It sounds like the APM or ACPI module for your computer was not recognized during install and hence not loaded.

    Shut Down

Thanks to all who answered to my thread. I was able to go to Power Options to fix the problem and now my machine turns off. Now I will try and install my new Router and network my 2 machines together. Not looking forward to this chore. If I have a problem will get back to post.
    Happy New Year to everyone.
