I recently had to re-install Windows XP ...now I have 2 windows directorys and want to know which is the old one so I can delete it to take care of space issues.....

    One is c:\windows
    One is c:\winnt

Also when I right click a directory to get the context menu...I get the hour glass for 10 min. or sometimes the directory never comes up...???

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

    Thank You.

Hi joezep1. If you aren't sure which windows folder is the new install and which one is the old install right click the folder and look at the date in which the folder was created. Whatever windows folder has an older date is the one that you can remove. When did you reinstall windows exactly? If it was very recently then I would reinstall XP again and format the drive so that way you will only have one Windows XP installation directory. If you are willing to install XP again then take a look here, Perform a clean install of Windows XP.

    Windows XP install

    Thanks much Evan !!!

I would rather not have to re-install windows again. I may just remove the old directory...and continue to on trying to fix the time delay on right clicking of folders... I appreiciate your time ..thats for sure!!!

    Regards!

    Joe D. ;)

Ok. You should be able to remove the old windows directory folder by figuring out what windows folder is the older one which I described in my earlier post. As far as the long right click issue take a look here, Slow Right Click in Windows Explorer.

How much time do you anticipate spending on the task of "fixing "? Removing the old directory and editing boot.ini is a quick task but the messed up registry that probably is the cause of the delays is not only a time consuming but risky business. I agree with Evan that a CLEAN install (booted from the XP CD followed by a full format) is the best option and also, in the long run, the least time consuming (add up all the 10 minute delays ... ;) ... ).
