SFC SCANNOW is asking for the CD:
Windows XP Professional Service Pack 1
when I run the program. I am trying to
    restore some lost files.

I do not have this CD. All I have is
a restore CD that came from the
    manufacture of my computer.

How do I get this CD.

    Thanks, Jerry

    Hi Jerry,

Either buy one, barrow one - think that will work, or ask the OEM for one.

    Regards - Charles

    Jerry,
Some restore disks have a menu of sorts that may include some diagnostics and repair tools.

Chances are though, you may have have to do what Charles suggests.
This is a real problem with these restore disks. My Toshiba laptop is the same.
Only thing I can suggest is to purchase a backup programme such as Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image 8.0, Drive image etc and make regular full system image backup so you can restore a recent copy of your OS rather than the old version in the restore discs that came with the PC. This would get you around "minor" issues that ordinarily would be fixible with an XP plain vanilla disc.

I use Acronis True image 8.0 and intend to backup the system to an external USB2 drive on a regular basis.

If you have a Dell, use the restore CD...the one that says "Operating System" on it. It's actually a pretty standard XP CD and it will work with SFC.

Or you can do a registry edit that will have SFC looking to the I386 folder for what it needs. First check the drive to make sure there is an I386 folder. If so, the registry edit will work.

Usual disclaimer: Modifying the registry incorrectly can result in big problems so do the following at your own risk. (I use this tweak a lot and haven't encountered any problems):

    1. Start>Run, type in "regedit" (without the quotes), click OK
    2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
    3. In the right-hand pane, you will see various entries. Find the one named "SourcePath "
    4. Right click on it, left click on "Modify "
    5. Change the D:\ to: C:\I386 (or whatever the exact path to the I386 folder is on your computer)
    6. Close the registry editor
