    Anyone met this problem?

My Windows XP Professional SP2 does not display icons. The desktop is blank (save for the background). The keyboard LEDs light but I do not get a response when I try the Ctrl+Alt+Del combination. The mouse pointer moves but there is no response to right or left mouse clicks.

The problem started when I tried to repair Kaspersky (licenced not trial). I have restarted the computer many times but the problem won't go away.

    Got my icons back

    [FONT= "Trebuchet MS"]
I have my icons and bars back. Restart > Press F8 > Select last known best configuration.

 But when I click on any icon I get the error message "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel "

Hi fkaramagi, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Since you can't seem to open any programs take a look here, Windows XP File Association Fixes.

Start with first running the .exe file assocation fix.

Rather than edit your post please make a new post as the edit can make a nonsense of a following post - I have removed my 'Please mark as Resolved' post.

    Not unzipping

    Evan,

The fixes are not unzipping! I get only an empty folder on double clicking the association fixes - no Registration entries.

I wanted to backup the files on an external disk and do a format, but I get Access denied when I try to copy files from My Documents. I have backed up the desktop though.

Your .Zip folder assocation is probably corrupted as well. You need to run the .Zip folder association fix first in order to unzip the other fixes.

Also the reason you are getting the access is denied error message is because you don't have permission to copy the files from your documents folder to your external harddrive. Take a look here, How to take ownership of a file or a folder in Windows XP.

I would like to suggest, what may be, a quicker fix for this problem. You have probably corrupted some files when trying too repair Kaspersky, did you do any registry edits?

I would first try this: Click "Start" then type sfc /scannow in the search box and hit enter. (Note the gap before the /) This will check and repair your windows file system, you may be asked to insert the Windows XP disc. This will not change any personal files.

    No luck!

The .Zip association opens in another tab and displays the info below.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip]
    @= "CompressedFolder "
    "Content Type "= "application/x-zip-compressed "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip\CompressedFolder]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip\CompressedFolder\ShellNew]
    "Data "=hex:50,4b,05,06,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip\OpenWithProgids]
    "CompressedFolder "=" "

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.zip\PersistentHandler]
    @= "{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb} "

    ..........

It's probably time to consider a Repair install of XP given that you have a retail copy of the installation disk at the same Service Pack level (SP2). If you haven't see if you can borrow one and use your CD key of course.

If you have a retail copy of the installation CD, but it is not at the same Service Pack level slipstream SP2 into it ......

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

When you are up and running upgrade to SP3 - SP2 is no longer supported by MS.

I think my PC is really sick. When I log in as Administrator in safe mode everything seems to be fine. I was even able to backup my files, unzip & run the associations, etc. but when I log in normally, I still cannot open any application - I get the same error message "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel ". Even after repairing Windows, the problem has remained. Fortunately I managed to backup my files. Now I am going to format the disk.

A clean install will correct all the errors but if the PC still does not run correctly I would then run a test on the hard drive. The best test will come from the manufacturers site which can be downloaded and burnt to a CD, then you can reboot the PC with the disc inserted and it will run the tests.

Let us know how you get on.

I would suspect Malware since SP2 is out of date & vulnerable. I suggest Format & Reinstall!

Since you are going to format and reinstall Windows make sure that you install Windows XP SP3 and all the other Windows patches following SP3 otherwise your computer could be compromised by malware infections.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of your computer issues that you have been experiencing have been caused by malware.

What kind of keyboard does the computer have? If its a USB keyboard try a PS/2 keyboard. If its a PS/2 keyboard see if using a USB keyboard will fix the problem.

Are you receiving an error message stating that a file needed for the keyboard driver is missing or that the keyboard was not found?

Can you be more specific with the error you get relating to the keyboard. Both PS2 and USB keyboards should work normally and not cause a problem during a clean install.

Your keyboard may have a fault, something like a key stuck down. Your first post,(quote) Ctrl+Alt+Del not working, suggests this may be the case.

Can you borrow another working keyboard to see if the error message repeats or not.
