Had been running my computer in dual boot mode with XP and Vista Ultimate, and had 2 GB of memory in machine. Got a good deal on some memory, and bought 4 GB and swapped the 2 Gs out. Now, Vista shows 4 GB of memory. XP shows 3.37 or something like that. This happens on two machines I have, so it is not memory itself. Seems to me that XP will only recognize 3+GB. Anyone know for sure what the capacity is?

True as to use, but Vista does report that 4 GB is installed. XP does not. And thanks for the excellent answer. I appreciate it.

I was reading what was in the new Service Pack, but I don't remember if it was Vista SP1 or Win XP SP3, that the method of reporting RAM was modified. It may say 4GB is installed, but you still can't use all of it

Though it reports 4GB, it still won't use it all. However, having 4 GB is not a waste as some RAM functions better when using matched pairs rather than a 2 GB stick & a 1 GB stick together.

Thanks again for answers, and btw, I also have the 64 bit version of Vista, just have not seen fit to install it. Thanks again.

You're welcome. Hold off on the 64 bits because there is a lack of driver and software support.

Maybe if you have legacy hardware, but I didn't have any problems with my 18 month old laptop.

Cool. I hadn't realized that 64bit drivers/firmware was as up to date. BTW, I have the D830.
