Hi, I have a Compaq Armada Laptop with 256 MB RAM with XP Pro installed. I've used the computer for about a year with no problem.

Then recently, I ran a registry cleanup program called Registry Purify 4.40 and immediately had a series of problems. I told it to reverse the changes, but most of the problems still existed afterwards.

Below is a list of issues I now have:

    1. Cannot move an icon - desktop or in a folder

    2. Can Copy or Cut, but cannot Paste

    3. Search function will not run

    4. Cannot remove a program in Control Panel "Add or Remove Programs "

    5. In Control Panel "Setup or Change an Internet Connection ", the dial-up option is grayed out as well as the broadband connection that requires a username and password.

    6. The broadband connection that is always on is available, but it will not succeed when preformed.

    7. Cannot run Administrative Tools in Control Panel, but can run all other options in Performance and Maintenance.

Other than that, everthing seems normal on the computer.

    Thanks for any help.

    Thanks Zander,
When I run System Restore, I get the message: "System Restore is not able to protect your comuter. Please restart your computer, and then run System Restore again" The same message comes up each time I run Sys Restore after rebooting.

    Thanks Steve,
When I try to remove the Reg Cleaner, it appears to be working, but then I get the following error: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed....." And of course, the reg cleaner program is not removed

I guess that I could have some kind of virus, but I had a current and updated subscription to Norton AV. Now when I try to run Norton AV, I get the following message: "Unable to open this Norton product. Please restart your computer" I'll try re-installing Norton AV.

Try scanning in safe mode. I think that the registry cleaner damaged your computer, and/or removed important registry entries.

Thanks Broni, I tried the sr.inf thing and I could never locate the sr.sy_ file even though my disk appeared to install it. Oh btw, my first home was in Daly City,,, King Drive. I'm thinking of moving back to SF

Thanks Cosmeo3000, you are right about damage to my registry. Otherwise why would Windows operate so well in all the other functions. I have not been able to figure out how to force my computer to boot to safemode.

Thanks Charlesvar, I've been leaning toward a repair install, and I think that's the course I'll follow. That MichaelStevens website seems to be right on. I'll let you know how it ends up.
