I'm not sure if this was mentioned on the forums, but I have searched for anything related to this, and nothing came up.

    So here goes my issue.

I bought a used laptop off of eBay, when I got, it ran brand new. I installed some stuff that I needed. Like Paint Shop pro, Ventrilo, Open Office, LimeWire, a Image Mapper program, Core FTP, MSN Live Messenger etc.

And then, I installed Ragnarok Online then installed Ethereal Revenge the server and set the resolution to 800x600 (no full screen). I've been playing the game for about a month since I got it.

The person I bought it from even gave me a Windows XP Pro copy.

Well last night I decided to set Ragnarok Onlines resolution to 1024 x 768 on FULL screen. It was working fine. I could always exit with out any lag and avoid my laptop freezing up. Well today I was playing it. I had Windows Live running, Ventrilo, and Ragnarok Online all at the same time. I wanted to switch to Ragnarok Online to exit it because all of a sudden it was lagging. I couldn't open anything. When I switched to it to exit properly, it froze. And gave me a black screen. Not even the mouse arrow was showing. So I decided to press ctrl, alt & del, and nothing came up. So I pressed the off button which I never do to turn off the laptop. And it gives me a blue screen. I think nothing of it, so I continue to turn it off.

This time windows doesn't load properly. It just gets worse. I even deleted some stuff that I thought might have caused it. I thought it might be because I have too much ****, so I uninstall my Ragnarok Online. I can hear the fan, and there is no clicking sound so I know that there shouldn't be any problems with the drives.

So I just decide to re-install Windows XP pro entirely. Well around two days ago my cousin borrowed my disc because she had no operating system on hers. I let her since I thought you can use it on any laptop if you wanted to. I am a dumby when it comes to Windows XP installation anything.

I then put the disc in, I get the installation process only to get things like "unable to install" so I delete the partion1 that held my old stuff so I can just redo everything since I also have a disc for the drivers and junk. Even before that it sometimes didn't load the blue screen that gives you options to install or repair or exit. But it still does it after I delete the partition.

Then I realized that when it begins with the white bar at the bottom it says things unrelated to Gateway, instead it says things related to my cousins laptop, like "Toshiba" "Compaq" and "IBM" my cousin has a Toshiba which if I am not mistaken is a Compaq not sure about the IBM, but I think Toshiba, Compaq and IBM all are the same if you know what I mean.

I tried it again before posting this, without me getting the black screen. I install and then now I get the blue screen of death that reads like this:

    ---------------------------------------

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: partmgr.sys

    DRIVER_UNLOADED_WITHOUT_CANCELLING_PENDING_OPERATIONS

If this is your first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x000000CE (0xF7895667, 0x00000000, 0xF7895667, 0x00000000)

    partmgr.sys

    -------------------------------

My laptop is Gateway, and not sure about the year, i'd have to look. I don't have a recovery disc. All I have is copied Windows XP Pro disc, and a drivers disc that has applications for the laptop as well.

I'm wondering if this is because my cousins laptop is being read by the Windows XP Pro disc rather than mine. If it is, is there a way around it or am I just better off getting another installation disc?

You should contact Gateway & get the correct (& legit) Windows XP disk for your system.
