We need to find out what processes are running in the background. Download HijackThis, create a new folder C:\HijackThis and extract the application into that folder. Double-click on the extracted file > Run > Do a system scan and save a log file > exit by the red cross. Go to C:\HijackThis and open hijackthis.log > post the contents here.

Now it's printing 3 and 4 pages at a time: every 4 or 5 minutes. I have tried selecting another printer as a default: to no avail. Also tried the print spoll thing: also to no avail and finally ran Kijachthis when it was pritning. Below are the results.

I'm not an expert but I see nothing suspicious such as malware.

However, C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Toolbox2.0\Apache Tomcat 4.0\webapps\Toolbox\StatusClient\StatusClient.exe caught my eye and I went google on StatusClient.exe.

One of the hits, statusclient.exe - statusclient - Process Information offers a "Free System Scan for statusclient.exe Related Errors ". I suggest that you run that scan.

I do see something that is questionable in your HJT log. I would have TeMerc look at it.

Okie dokie, lets get down an dirty.

Below you will find my results and recommendations. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

First thing we need to do is stop the Windows TCP/IP Socket Driver service:
Go to: Start > Run > type " services.msc ", then click OK

Scroll down to the Windows TCP/IP Socket Driver service.

Click it to highlight it, then <right-click> and select: Properties
Select and set "Service Status" option to "Stop"
Select: "Startup type" and set it to "Disabled ", click Apply, then OK.

Then go to this page, Panda ActiveScan
    • Click the 'Scan your PC' button. ( You may have to disable any pop up blockers)
    • Then press the green 'Check Now' button.
    • Enter your country and state along with a valid email address.
    • Allow the ActiveX install, it may be a few minutes for all components. (For XP SP 2 watch for the yellow bar at the top of IE)
    • Once installation is complete you will need to select a device to scan. Please select 'My Computer' and the scan will begin.
    • Once the scan is done, click the 'See report' button, then the 'save report' button. Be sure to save the log file created in a place easy for you to find. (Please edit out any cookie, Recyler and System Volume Information Folder references)

Run Hijackthis and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes next to them and press the "Fix Checked" button with HijackThis. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, or other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\winsock\csrss.exe

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,C:\WINDO WS\winsock\csrss.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Machine] temp.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Machine] temp.exe

O23 - Service: Windows TCP/IP Socket Driver (winsck) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\winsock\csrss.exe (file missing)

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

And search for, then delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\winsock\csrss.exe<<<--this file
    temp.exe<<<--this file

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

    TeMerc,

Attached is the latest hijack list.

In addition, on your write up you said to stop Windows tcp/ip. It wasn't on and I could not enable it. Anyhow I got everything else done and will attach the listing below. So far so good, no additional printing. But time will tell as it sets overnight. Also I have cleaned up the adwares quite a bit. Spybot didn't fix them all.

Thanks again and I'll give you an update tomorrow.

Ok, well since my last post here I have been involved with another nasty infection, which as it turns out, you have too.

We need to run another fix.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
    • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Once you sort your malware issues, delete all defined printers. Then cleanup your existing printer drivers: http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/CleanPrinterDrivers.htm

Install only the drivers needed, and download fresh up-to-date versions before installing.

Bill thanks for offering your suggestions, but we need to get the special tool to run its course before we fix things.

It's likely the F line, 04 and 023 will be rmeoved by the tool.

If the problem still remains with the printer we'll address that.

    Latest update.

Now the printer prints TWO pages and the first one has a small square in the same place as the happy face was and the second page has a happy face. And it's doing it more often than it was.

Ok, aside from the printing problem are there any other unwanted symptoms with your machine? Let me know.

At this point, if there are no other infection problems, I would try what Bill suggested to try and clear the print jobs which appear, disregarding however the entries in HJT.

    TeMerc,

No. no other problems other than a 'trojan horse' that just showed up with a symantec virus scan. Called C:\RECYCLER\bin32\services.exe is infected with Trojan Horse. Which I cannot find it in the recyle bin.

That's harmless, and unaccessable, protected by Norton.

Let me know what happens with Bills suggestions.

Lets do a couple of other quick final clean ups.

We have 4 more things to do, to help ensure you have removed all the little 'leftovers' which may be hiding:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
    Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

    Lastly, empty your Recyle Bin.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

I think I did all of the above correctly!!

However nothing has been resolved and it's a bit worse. I cannot get any printer to install: To wit the wizzard says it cannot find my connection (usb port) however it always starts the wizzard on a reboot or a scan. So without any printers installed I still get my "happy face" and it prints two or three sheets whenever it wants to.

As I'm fairly certain this not related to malware and likely a printer related problem, I don't have much to offer beyond whats already been posted here.

My range of knowledge is not all that expansive once I get out of the malware world.

It would certainly seem tho, we have many others who do know something about the subject beyond my limits.

Wish I could be of more help.
