    Hello,

I have a PC running Windows XP connected to a server running SBS2003. I keep all my PCs and servers updated with Windows Update. I also run f-Prot antivirus, Malwarebytes, and SpyBot. Finally, my whole network sits behind a Juniper Network firewall.

For a while I have noticed that my PC is taking a long time to boot up. Several new apps have been installed recently including Yahoo messenger. This morning I decided to use SpyBot. I first updated the file, then immunized my system (there were 50,000 unprotected items). Then I used SpyBot's advanced feature that allows me to "turn off" various items in the Start Up list. As I understand it, this feature removes the item from start up but does not delete it from the computer. I went down the list (there were 20+ items listed) and only removed ones that I felt comfortable that I did not need automatically. These include Yahoo Messenger, several ones concerning my nVidia display, etc. I only turned off items SpyBot said were unnecessary.

I had MS Outlook 2007 open at the time. Right after I closed SpyBot Outlook lost connection with the OST file that is on my server. This is strange because all I did was change start-up settings. I tried opening Windows Explorer and I could not see any of my network drives. When I first re-booted my computer it hanged. Then I booted in safe mode with networking turned on. At that point I restored to yesterday's save point. Windows restore ran for some minutes then came back with an error saying nothing was restored because nothing changed. I rebooted (took forever to boot), went into SpyBot and turned all the start-up items back on. Rebooted again and I still have the problem.

At this point I thought maybe this was my server, so I rebooted the SBS server. Another PC running Windows 7 seems to be fine with the server. Any ideas what could be causing the problem?

Hi Mr Chip, how old is the HDD on your XP PC? It might pay to run the HD manufacturers test software to see if its failing. Neil.

"Cleaning" tools that break perfectly working systems.... now where have I heard that before

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

If all you have as "backup" is a system restore, you could be in a world of hurt.

I think you have two options.

1st try running sfc /scannow from a command prompt.

2nd Do a Windows Repair install, hopefully you have your XP installation disk.

Boot from the WinXP CD (you may have to change a setting in your BIOS that allows you to boot from the CD). Do not choose the option to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console when prompted, choose the option to To set up Windows XP now press ENTER.

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
