    "Windows XP" missing Registry key

I am making this new thread because Previously there was a similar thread that expired without being resolved:

    Hi all,

In trying to find out why I am missing some System Tray Icons, I came across various forum posts about tweaking some registry keys in this location:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\

... but I don't have the \Windows component of that location and don't know what's causing it or what else it might be affecting. Can anyone advise what I'm likely up against here and what I need to do to fix this?

    Thanks!

    Jeff

this refers to the problem of missing ICONS on the Task bar

There are postings in the Internet to solve this issue like for instance:
How-to for fixing missing icons in the Windows Vista system tray:

    1. Back up the Registry by creating a restore point.
    2. Go to Start > Run (or Windows-key + "Râ€), type in "regedit" and hit "OKâ€.
    3. Navigate to the key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotifyâ€.
    4. Delete the values "IconStreams" and "PastIconsStreamâ€.
    5. Open up the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the "Processes" tab, select "explorer.exe" and click "End Processâ€.
    6. Open the "Applications" tab and click "New Task…" at the bottom-right of the window.
    7. In the message box that pops up type in "explorer.exe" and hit "OKâ€.
    8. Explorer.exe will reload, and the missing icons should now be back in the system-tray where they belong.

But his is for WINDOWS VISTA not for WINDOWS XP.

For WINDOWS XP You will find TrayNotify here:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify

Therefore you should change the instructions as follows:

How-to for fixing missing icons in the Windows Vista system tray:

    1. Back up the Registry by creating a restore point.
    2. Go to Start > Run (or Windows-key + "Râ€), type in "regedit" and hit "OKâ€.
    3. Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify .

And there you go!!! Problem Resolved.

Sometimes you have to restart the computer. I posted your second regedit procedure years ago in order to rermove the Past Items list in the systray(Notification Area) and it works in both Windows XP Home and Windows Professional, but I may not have been the first one to do so. Also there are some registry tweaks that work in Win XP Pro that will not work in Win XP Home Edition.
