First of all I want to say apparently I am a beginner at the technical aspects of the computer

    Windows XP/Firewall/ISP Compuserve
I am running McAfee firewall 7.0. I decided to upgrade compuserve ISP from 6.0 to 7.0 I downloaded 7.0 and my computer froze up in last part of installation. Had to restart my computer. Compuserve could not sign in under 6.0 or 7.0 i finally figured out disabling my firewall was not enough I removed the program. After I stratighten out CS and decided to keep 6.0I re-installed McAfee 7.0But there was an error. I tried to reinstall, wouldn't work. So I thought I had to remove McAfee once again. But this time when I try to remove program I receive this error from Windows:ERROR 1721There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact support personnel or package vendor.

OK...then when I click onto McAfee to run a virus scan i get this error:
The item "vs main.exe" that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly.Problem with this is I am in programs clicking on McAfee, I am not click ing a short cut icon. This is all messed up. Can someone give me a clue on how to starighten this all out?ThanksKaren

    Hi Karen,

I think you should re-install it, something is missing. I don't know what you're doing in the Program files, normally applications should be initiated from the shortcuts set up by them, especially a program that has so many parts. It really isn't just one program. By re-installing it, should get all of the parts back. Then you can think about un-installing it. And make sure that none of McAfee is running when re-installing.

    Regards - Charles

I have tried to reinstall the firewall program and I receive a
fatal error code. What ever that is.

I can't reinstall and I can't remove. I have even tried to repair the program and that didn't work.

    Hi Karen,

    Try this:

Go into msconfig - start > run > type msconfig > ok. On the screen that comes up, you have 3 startup modes, normal which should be ticked now, diagnostic, and selective.

Tick the diagnostic startup and apply. When given the choice - reboot. When XP comes back up, it will look strange, no color, and McAfee should not be running.

See if you can now work on McAfee w/o getting any error messages.

To revert back to normal startup, go back into msconfig and tick the normal startup option and reboot.

    Regards - Charles
