I have an XP question that I haven't seen here. I go to Mardi Gras each year and have a small collection of pics on my computer of "girls doing what they do at M.G. ". I also subscribe to a M.G. newsgroup and have M.G. sites bookmarked. My girlfriend and her young son are moving in and he'll be using my computer. I don't want him to access anything "inappropriate" for a minor. Is there a way to set up two seperate passwords so that when he signs in on his password, he won't see my bookmarks or subscribed newsgroups? Also, can I password protect my pic folder? Thanks for any help!

    Yes you can do both.

To create a new user; Start Control Panel, click on User Accounts. Click on "Learn About - User Accounts" and "Learn About - UserAccount Types" in the upper left hand corner of the window to learn more about the different types of accounts and what each type of account can do and see.

When your done reading these click on Create a New User, type a name for the new account, and then click on next. In Pick An Account Type select Limited and then click on Create Account.

Under User Accounts you will now see the account you just created. Double click on the new account, click on Create a Password, Type in the new password, type it in again to confirm it, and then click on Create Password. When your done click on the X to close the User Accounts Window. When you're girlfriend and her son move in give him the name and password for his account.

Also remember to go to your own account and create a password if you don't already have one. This will prevent others from accessing the system as you and looking through your private files. Also remember that if you log into your account and forget to log out that anyone who sits down at the computer will be able to see everything that you can, so it is important that if you are going to be away from the computer for any length of time that you always log off first. This will also force your girlfriends son to log into his own account.

To create a password for your pic folder; Click on Start, Programs, Windows Explorer. Navagate to the folder that you keep your pictures in, right click on the folder, select Sharing & Security from the pop menu. On the Sharing Tab put a checkmark in Make this Folder Private, then click on Apply and OK.

You should be set. Hope this helps. :)

    Thank you Rod!

Thanks so much Rod! This will be very helpful!!
I have one other question, which is more curiousity than anything else.
When her son signs in with his password, if he looks in the "Temporary Internet Files" or "Temp" folders, will he see different items than what I'll see with my log in?
    Thanks again for your help!

    Glad to be of help.

In answer to your other question; Yes, you will both see different items in your Temporary Internet File Folders as long as you're both logging in and out of your own accounts.

Start Windows Explorer after setting up the new account and you will notice that both of your accounts are now listed under Documents and Settings. Under each account you will notice that each contains thier own set of folders such as; Cookies, Desktop, Start Menu, Favorites, etc. One of these is also Temporary Internent Files which is found at Documents and Settings/User Name/Local Settings.

Also another suggestion I might make, if you haven't already done so, is to set Internet Explorer to automatically delete Temporary Internet Files each time its closed. Keep in mind that this will only delete files and file parts, the actual cookies will remain unless you delete them manually, or delete them through Internet Explorer.

To make this setting open Internet Explorer, click on Tools, Internet Options, click on the Advanced Tab, and scroll down the page until you see the option Empty Temporary Internet Files When Browser is Closed and place a checkmark in this option.

Personnally I go through my Temporary Internet Files every week and so and delete the ones that I don't want or need. But keep in mind that if you delete certain cookies, like the one that points to this site you will have to log into the site again using your user name and password, so if there are sites that I visit all the time I leave them alone.

    Hope this helps. :)
