Hi, I am trying to take a look at my cousins computer. It is freezing intermitantly when doing various things from email to word processing. The computer is only really used for MS office and internet. He has norton AV and nothin has come up and I cleaned all spyware no problems. I ran HJT and there is a lot of resluts that I am not sure of so I thought I would see if you guys could help me out a little more as I do not want to ***** something up.

    Thanks,

    Hello FleaDubU,

    I don't see anything malicious.

What you can do is first look up your running processes/startups and see what they are and if they are necessary running all the time http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425

This kind of problem is a bear to run down w/o a smoking gun.

You may have to selectively shut down apps - run for awhile - then shut down the next, and so on. You pick the likeliest first. This may very well be a case of conflicting software.

Then there is the possibilty of hardware problem:

    http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp Check memory

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx Check disk

    Regards - Charles

Forgot to mention one other place to look for problems - the Event Viewer:

Right click My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer and expand to show the three categories, look for any error right around the time that the system freezes.

Right click on the line - more info on the error. You can copy/paste the info here, maybe it'll be enlightening.

    Regards - Charles

OK, I think i narrowed the problem down to MS Word. I believe that the computer is only freezing while using Word. I do not have the installation cds here right now and they need to use the program regularly so I do not want to unistall it right now. Is there any way to run a check on office to see if there is a problem or does anyone have any other suggestions.

    Thanks

    Hi FleaDubU,

Sounds like Word is corrupted, have to re install it - happened to me.

See if Word will run w/o problems with as many other programs not running as possible.

    Regards - Charles
