aight....i got Windows XP professional, came with computer, so i don't have the disk....everything has been running perfectly fine on it until i go to download Kazaa...i downloaded the install file for it...and started to load it, in the install file it has to download stuff from the Kazaa servers or something...while it was downloading those i began to get this little window that would repeatedly pop up...i canceled the install and deleted it immediately.....the window i am still getting now is this:

    No. Not very informative.

I'd say that without a CD, you are up the creek, unless you can borrow one.

It's "possible" (but unlikely) that there is a recovery partition on your drive. If you give the make/model, maybe someone with a similar machine can advise.

Let's grab hold of the reins here!

You did not say you were dead in water!

    Clarify!

You are booting and operating, but are getting this message repeatedly? You have some function?

    If so do this!

Boot to safe mode (hit F8 while booting). If you make it to safe mode go to add/remove and uninstall the Kazaa.

Still in safe mode do a disk search for kazaa and delete all it finds!

Still in safe mode do the following

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

Now reboot to full mode and do the following!

    Download SpyBot!

    Spyware and adware removal

    SpyBot <http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download>

Run this twice delete all it finds, "ALWAYS" run this before AdAware.

Leave all it wants to leave after the second run.

    AdAware 6.0 <http://www.lavasoft.com>

    Run only after SpyBot!

Make sure to configure to Max settings, all files and compressed files. Delete all it finds "all "!

    BHO Demon <http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm>

A BHO is like a autostart/startup that only runs when you run the Browser.

This program runs stand alone no install is required post me the items it finds other than the below. Normal entries here would be Acro….. (Acrobat Reader) or Nav…. (Norton Anti virus).

If you can do all of this then it should be fixed. So get back to us and we will tell you how to do Kazaa!

    Mike--

i haven't tried what you suggested doing 'cause i haven't needed to yet.....before i posted my problem i tried rebooting my computer, and all signs of Kazaa were removed.

But since my last reply to Abraxas i have turned my computer off... for the night, naturally. I turned it back on about 20 minutes ago and i have yet to get another one of those windows.

I haven't attempted to download Kazaa again yet, i'm gonna give the computer a few more days (shutting off after each day) to see if i get those windows back again....if i don't, i'll attempt Kazaa again.....
But if i get the windows back, i'll do all that stuff you suggested and get back to you on it.
    Thanks-
    Urn

Reign Holder - I strongly suggest you go for Kazaa Lite or some other alternative to Kazaa. It is well known for loading your PC with spyware/malware without your knowing it. Can and does cause all sorts of problems. Kazaa Lite is by a different company and does not do this but has the same functions as Kazaa as far as I know.

Mike - sorry to hear you got the gout. Not fun stuff at all.

    Thanks for the thoughts Newt!

Starting to be good fishing weather huh?

    ReinHolder

    What did BHO Demon have?

And is there anything you don't recognize running in startup or when you do a ctrl alt del?

Oh yes what I told you to do did work. It worked to clean the slate and to help increase the performance and stability of your computer. You should notice a difference, or will when you get rid of this problem

But appearently you still have the Virus or are bieng reinfected.

Get these qiuck and dirty Virus cleaners and run them then do the below online scans:

    Special Virus cleaners

    Stinger http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
    PQremove http://www.webmasterfree.com/software/2911.html

These are the Delta force for only the newest and most prolific viruses today.
Use these if it is possible that a virus may have disabled your regular scanner.
For a quick clean, and then if they find and clean anything do a full deep scan with a full-fledged scanner.
If you suspect a virus has disabled your regular scanner you should do 3 things

    1. Download STINGER and PQREMOVE and run them. NOTE: always download them do not run an older one that you have had; these 2 are updated almost daily.

    2. Do an online dedicated Trojan/worm scan and online regular virus scan.

    3. If your virus scanner was up to date, and "IF" either 1 or 2 above finds a virus then it is possible that your virus scanner has been disabled. You should completely uninstall and reinstall your virus scanner update it and run it in full mode with max settings.

    SysClean http://www.trendmicro.com/download/tsc.asp

You best do a couple of online scans try these, do the Trojanscan first:

    Online Virus scanners
    http://www.anti-trojan.net/at.asp?l=en&t=onlinecheck
    http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

aight...i have done all of that...

the BHO Demon only found the Google Toolbar, i put that on my computer, and it's been on long before these windows started...so yea...

i went and ran everything you said to...went to the Trend Micro site, and wasn't sure what to get...i already have PC-cillin 2000 on my computer, but i downloaded PC-cillin 2003, uninstalled 2000 and ran 2003....it found 4 viruses:

3 cases of "PE_ELKERN.D" which were "cleaned "
and i case of "BKDR_EvlULBOX.A" and that was quarintened..

all the other programs and scanners found nothing, i ran PC-cillin last, even after the online scanners.

your last 2 links: Bit Defender and Panda Software didn't work though....

Bit Defender took me to a blank screen with teh Bit Befender website Nav bar at the top of the screen....i waited forever for it to load, but the browser said "Done "....i also got two of my windows while i was waiting for that page to load....

the Panda Software site doesn't exist

    sooo....with that......what now? i haven't gotten anymore windows since i've run PC-cillin 2003....but last time i said that i got more after i posted.........

    Mmmmmm

Glad you found the other Virus's maybe you do have it fixed now!

They were the reason you thought it was fixed before!

I just checked all of the links I sent and all work for me. Maybe you did them while you still had the Virus or you do have some other problem?

No need to run them for now let's see how things go.
