    Need your help,
I'm running WinXP (duh)...Windows recognizes my modem in the device manager, under modems in the control panel. I can even do a query on it, and it works fine. The modem also works fine in my Win98 computer, and my modem out of the Win98 couputer is recognized in the XP computer, but that's all.
Now the problem: In XP you have to go into My Networking to setup the dial-up connection manually (I'm sure you already knew that). Working off my old memory\brain...I selected dial-up, then manual settings, then I SHOULD have a selection button for my modem...all it has is one for broadband (meaning it doesn't recognize my modem). My ISP is PeoplePC, so I had them send me a disk thinking I could bypass My Networking. It couldn't find a modem either.
Other steps I have done: removed the modem, and let windows reinstall it. Removed it and tried reinstalling it myself through add hardware. Both modems I have are Hardware Compliance modems for XP, and I had been using this one on the XP computer for 6 + months now.
What started the problem (if you want to go in-depth): I took the advice from a newsletter (WINXPNews), and suppressed my password on login. Will the next time I rebooted...it came up to administrator under user without a password. It wouldn't let me past it using every means possible (I mean I put in every password I had used for the last six months). I tried contacting WinXPNews to see if I missed a step, or what could be done to help me. Anyway, I took things into my own hands an reloaded Windows over top itself (I didn't want to loose a program I didn't have a backup for at the time was why I'm doing a clean re-install). Everything loaded perfectly by the way. With the exception of my modem problem of course.
A little help would be much appreciated,
    BJ Beams

ps. I also tried all my COMM ports...none worked

This may be and age old case of the Modem itself being the problem.

MANY times an Internal will work in one OS but not in another.

A simple cure for this is an External. Very seldom if ever do they refuse to work. And they travel from one OS to the other very nicely.

A thing that may work for you. Firgure out (or decide) what com port the modem will be using and then disable that com port in the BIOS. then try the modem install again. With the port disabled in BIOS, you will absolutely know that only XP is working the the port.

I just installed a Lucent internal winmodem last Friday and basically had all the problems you described. Disabled all com ports, etc. Win recognized the modem, loaded (supposedly) proper drivers off the cd, but it still wouldn't work. I finally found the 'hidden' SETUP program on the cd, ran it and Walla!. Win chose com6 (huh?) but works fine.

    Good luck
