I noticed a 260MB directory on my hard drive a couple of days ago, and my guess is this is a Windows operating system. Have been having problems with my computer, and am speculating that is was set up for making my machine into a warez server.

It looks like you tried to upgrade to SP2? Or tried to slipsteam?

    Arie,

I don't know what slipstream is, but I did try to upgrade to SP2. Boy do I feel dumb. What do I do now?

    Hello marty,

What's the name of this directory? IF you've installed SP2, 260 MB's is about the size of the SP2 $UninstallServicePack.. folder in Windows.

Is SP2 running? My Computer > System information. There also should be a Shield symbol in the tray unless you disabled it.

Is there a Add/Remove entry for SP2? There also should be a restore point made which SP2 makes prior to the install.

    Regards - Charles

I tried to install SP2 but apparently that didn't take. So you're saying that this directory is a backup for SP1? Guess I can delete it then.

    Hi Marty,

So you're saying that this directory is a backup for SP1?
That's not what I wrote, but if SP2 "didn't take ", it may well be the Uninstall files for SP1.

Once again, what is the name of the directory? And the rest of my questions, is there an Add/Remove entry for SP2? Is there a restore point created by the SP2 install attempt?

I tried to install SP2 but apparently that didn't take.
How do you know? What message(s) did you get?

    Regards - Charles

    Hi Charles,

    Ok.

    >Once again, what is the name of the directory?
    8323eb7d23b78bfbcff87657f1a26e17

    >is there an Add/Remove entry for SP2?

I can't get to the add/remove programs panel at the moment, probably need to reboot and try again.

    >Is there a restore point created by the SP2 install attempt?

    have restores disabled

    >>I tried to install SP2 but apparently that didn't take.
    >How do you know? What message(s) did you get?

It froze. Twice. Finally I rebooted (again) and forgot about it.

    Hi Marty,

Ok, have no idea what 8323eb7d23b78bfbcff87657f1a26e17 is.

Is it on C\: as a primary folder or is it under \Windows\?

Can you access this folder? If you can, a Services Pack's uninstall files consist of the old versions of things like .dll's - notepad.exe - wordpad.exe and so forth.

You can try to delete after you look at it, but first burn it out or move it to another folder other than \Windows\ if its there or to another drive\partition if you have more than one.

You really ought to get drive imaging software if you're not using SR - good idea to have anyway. http://www.apricorn.com/ the one I use, has clone software as well.

It's on the root of my F:\ partition

    >Can you access this folder?
    Yes

wordpad.exe is there, with the same timestamp as my copy on C:\Windows\system32... notepad.exe for some reason isn't there

Those long-named alpha-numerical folders are created during the installation of hotfixes and I suppose service packs too. The hotfix or service pack files are extracted into it and I assume that the installation takes place from there. Under normal (successful) circumstances, the folder will be automatically deleted upon completion of the installation.

    Hi Christer,

Thanks, never saw anything like that.

Under normal (successful) circumstances, the folder will be automatically deleted upon completion of the installation
That dovetails with the unsuccessful SP2 install.

    Hi Charles!

I occasionally work on slower computers, even slower than my own ...... :D ...... and the extraction process can be seen while it takes place. On a computer with more than one partition, that folder will be created on a different partition than the system partition but on a computer with a single partition, there is no choice but C:.

Yes, but the question is why the installation stalled and at which stage?

    marty,
it seems like Your installation is corrupt since notepad.exe is missing. I would start by enabling System Restore since as Charles mentioned, it's better than nothing.

Next, I would do some house cleaning:

    - delete the alpha-numerical folder
    - delete temporary internet files
    - delete cookies (unless You have a specific reason to keep them)
    - delete history
    - run disk cleanup
    - defragment

Before continuing - BACKUP ALL IMPORTANT USER FILES TO CD/DVD.

Make another attempt to install SP2 from the CD.
(The installer will create a System Restore Point.)

    Christer
