A friend of mine got his new laptop, he lend it to his girlfriend and she started downloading from the Internet a lot of "funny" icons. Now, when he changes his background, the icons will have, instead of transparent, a square background around the name of it. We tried changing the background settings to the default Xp, but it seems that nothing will change it.

    Hello Kerberos,

Along with the "funny" icons, she downloaded application(s)/processes as well. Whether malicious or not remains to be seen.

Follow the instructions here http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=57777 for running security software scans and posting a HijackThis log.

    Regards - Charles

    Hello Kerberos,

Please don't let my suggestion detour you from following Charlesvar's adviced. A good critter check and cleanup will often catch something you didn't even know was a problem.

    But.....

In addition to this you may wish to check the visual effects being used via a right click on the "my Computer" desktop icon.
    >select properties
    >select advanced tab
    >In the category of Performance click on the settings button
    >Make sure the option box "use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" is checked [enabled]. If checked already, you may wish to uncheck it and recheck it, in case windows is having a case of amnesia.
    > apply and okay your way out.

The above suggested without knowing the icon package that was downloaded and used. Depending upon what it is and how it is used, it may be controlling the visual effects. In that case the option would be within that program somewhere. Knowing the details of what was downloaded and used would help!

    Hello Kerberos,

    Download and run HijackThis:

Download from here http://radiosplace.com/ latest version 1.99.1

Download it to it's own folder, for example create a folder C:\HijackThis

unzip (double click on zipped folder)

    click on the execute

click on Do a system scan and save a logfile and save to the folder you just created

copy resultant .txt file and paste into your next post.

    Regards - Charles
