I hope this one goes on google as the first choice when you type in "sniper9228 "

    Sniper9228 = Rare Question

After knowing how many years I have been on these forums and how many posts I have made.

You think that sniper should know what he is talking about

    _______________________________________________________________

REINSTALLING WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION UPGRADE WITH SP1

How do I go about doing this? Of course I installed this before

((((((My point of this post)))) = Clean fresh error free crash free install

    =
I have looked at this site.
    http://www.theeldergeek.com/xp_home_install_-_graphic.htm

    I understand following that process.

    =======

What I need from you folks is

What should I do first once I get to the desktop after install

Should I right away install SP2 or apply updates from sp1

Which updates do I need and don't need
    when to install antivirus
    when do I defrag

    In other words.

When you get to your desktop after a XP installation, what are the first things you should do, drivers?

First the chip set drivers that came with the mobo.

If the pc is connected to the internet, the next thing or two would be your antivirus and firwall program if you have one...

    Then the SP2
Then Windows Updates...There'll be about 90 of em....

    Hi sniper9228 !

    A few important (?) suggestions:

All peripheral devices (scanner, printer, card readers and so on) should not be connected until the installation is complete.

Also, disconnect all external AND INTERNAL hard disks (other than the one onto which the installation should go) until the installation is complete.

Consider separating your data from the operating system and programs. This involves partitioning the hard disk in C: for the OS and PGMS, D: for Data during the installation. Also, consider a second hard disk for backups.

I recommend slipstreaming SP2 into the install CD. That is a process which integrates SP2 and burns a new bootable CD. This will be the cleanest possible installation, quite a bit smaller in size.

Next, I would install drivers for the motherboard, graphics card, sound card and other integrated components. (Of course, all drivers downloaded in advance!)

Next, I would install all needed updates to XP. (Again, downloaded in advance.)

(As a Ghost user, my first Image would be created at this stage.)

Next, I would install all programs that are "for keeps ", such as Office (updates downloaded in advance), Acrobat (full, not reader), burning software and so on.

(As a Ghost user, my second Image would be created at this stage.)

Next, I would install my FireWall and AntiVirus software of choice. This would be the first time I connect to the internet to update any software.

(As a Ghost user, my third Image would be created at this stage.)

If you want me to, I can provide a list of needed updates to Windows XP and Office XP!

Once you have it up and running do not download and install those programs that have given you problems in the past. You seem to constantly find bad programs to install on your computer.

Here is one of our HijackThis canned speeches at GeekU. These tips can help keep you clean and secure.

[*]Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
[*]Use an Anti-Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

[*]Update your Anti-Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your anti-virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti-virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

[*]Use a Firewall - I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

[*]Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

[*]Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an anti-virus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

[*]Install AdAware - Install and download AdAware. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an anti-virus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using AdAware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

[*]Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

[*]Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
[/list]Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

    • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
    • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1, which is your local computer
    • Google Toolbar <= Get the free Google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
    • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Here's what I do more or less at first boot:

    1. since I am connected via a router I don't install antivirus until last.
    2. change start menu to Classic & display Admin Tools in programs menu.
    3. change desktop bg & screensaver to None.
    4. customize desktop to display icons.
    5. uncheck Desktop Cleanup to run every 60 days.
    6. install MB chipset drivers.
    7. install other drivers if necessary (video, audio, etc)
    8. set desired System Properties (disable remote access, system restore, error reporting, & other changes.
    9. config Services.
    10. install Service Pack 2 IF the install was XP Orig or SP1. (all SP1 updates are included in SP2 anyway)
    11. delete any & all Temp files.
    12. delete Prefetch files.
    13. empty recycle bin.
    14. disable Prefeth via Drive Properties (by unchecking Indexing Service checkbox)
    15. other minor tweaks & changes.
16-a. Use Disk Mgmt. to setup other partitions in free space (if don't already exist)
16-b. change drive letters of partitions/cd-dvd drives to desired order.
    17. defrag Windows drive (even though defrag says it unnecessary, defrag anyway)
    18. make a Ghost image of op sys partition, save to desired partion, test image integrity, reboot.
    19. Control Panel, config devices & settings to desired.
    20. PRIOR to first use of browser ControlPanel/Internet Options & config.
    21. install all other 3rd party software & hardware.
    22. reconfig settings made earlier that may have been altered by 3rd party software.
    23. when all running smooth, make another Ghost image.
    24. Windows Update (only if comp is for my client, if for me, install only wanted updates untuil SP3 is released)
25 install antivirus & update it.
    26. if comp is for me, spend next month hacking around & try to break it!

I came to think of one additional update to XP SP2, one that is connected to FlashPlayer (061019-KB923789). I recommend updating FlashPlayer from Adobe's site rather than installing the MS update. If you get a prompt from Windows Update about this one, head towards Adobe ... ... !
