Can anyone tell me if a recently issued CD for Windows XP would have SP-1 on it. I'm asking if Microsoft has now included the sevice packs on the CDs they are selling now. Or, how can I determine if they have been included. I will not have access to the CD until I'm ready to install it. Thank you.

I'm not aware that this is the case.

Currently with Win2K, for example, the media comes as the original CD and then includes a CD with SP3 (soon to include SP4 I guess) for you to apply afterwards.

I could of course be completely wrong :)

My understanding is that install cd's issued from last October contained SP1 or, latterly SP1a (same, but lacks M$ Java). So make sure that the CD is current - not old stock.

Should be indicated on the box/cd I guess.

I assume you are aware that a legit copy of XP can only be installed and activated on a single PC?

Just purchased XP Home Edition less than 30 days ago. Newer version do have Sp1 included. On the box I have in the lower right hand corner it says "Version 2002 ". On the CD it states Service pack 1 included. My best guess would be to make sure the box has Version 2002 on it.

Thank you for your replies, all good information. The Windows XP that I'll be installing will be a legitimate CD. The link that Steve R Jones provided to DynamicD (above) supplied the answer as to how to determine which, if any, SP version is installed. Apparently SP1a was released in February of this year, but now I know how to check for the SP additions.

    Hi, Derf ~

If you are holding a legitimate XP CD, it will be noted on the disc whether it is XP, XP SP1, XP SP1a, or XP SP2.

Not sure what you mean here since neither posted here and there are no links above.

Ahhh... if this is what you mean from another thread, Differences between SP1 & SP1a, then let me apologize for the redundancy. :)

    Hi Bruce,

I should have been more precise in bringing up Steve R Jones response, but you got to it and the apology is on my end. It is probably a little late in explaining my oriiginal post. The Window XP installation will be on someone else's computer and it is my understanding that to download the SPs over a telephone line will take some time. What I have in mind, should it be necessary, was to download over my cable to a CD.

Thank you for your help and interest.

    Hi everyone,

The easiest way to determine if you have SP1 is to right click on "my computer" from the start menu and under the general tab it will tell you what version of XP, the date, and the service pack installed.

OOPS! Forgot to say to click on properties after right clicking on my computer.
    So sorry!

Another suggestion if you have a CD without the service pack would be to download the service pack and then burn a new CD with XP and SP1a slipstreamed onto the CD.

For one thing, it seems to work a little cleaner than installing and then applying the SP. For another, if you ever have to do any repair work (like sfc /scannow) that replaces system files, you know they'll be the new versions and you won't have to reapply the SP when you are done.
