I was following the instructions in" Windows XP inside out" for securing the administrators account. I went in to Usre Groups as the administrator and changed the name to my first name. I then had the ststem randomly generate a password, wrote it down as specified and rebooted on closing. When the system came back up I went back in to generate new accounts for myself and my wife as power users, leaving the newly changed admin account alone. After the changes I rebooted again and when the system came up, my desktop logon picture had changed and I cannot get any password to work and cannot logon as administrator using the previously generated account name or password. That account is displayed in users in the computer management screen as the administrator, but I have no idea what to do about the password as it appears that has somehow changed. Help Me

Did you also try the old password?

Try if it works in safe mode.

If that doesn't work you're out of luck.

XP Administrator code solution is...re activate Windows XP through Microsoft, according to my past experience there is no other way to overcome this problem othan than "Format C:" using Fat 32 and reinstalling XP.:)
You must reactivate through microsoft using the disc owners (xp disc) I.D. information registerd with Microsoft, they are open 24 hrs. Good luck and if you need more on that issue post again.

    another way

You could also install a second copy of Win-xp on a second partition. or even the same one if you plan on just gathering your important data for a quick back up.

You will be able to access the old drives through the new one and can make cahnges etc from there. Password files etc.

    Good luck

Thanks everyone. I finally just re-formated and re-installed XP Professional.

Quite often before this happened, my saved password would change itself to something much longer than it should have been. Wouldn't think that could happen.

Almost wish I had a hacking program to try getting in from our other computer, but I didn't have a clue how to go about that.

Thanks again for the suggestions.

    Keno..Important 2 know

Most are not aware but should know that... XP offers to directions the first being Fat 32 and the second NTFS.
When installing XP Pro or XP Home a window opens allowing you to "Format" your hard drive, either with "Fat 32" or "NTFS ".
If you format using fat 32 hackers can visit with ease, if you format with NTFS hackers will need an angel on their side to visit.

Once you use NTFS you will have a hell of a time going back to Fat 32, but NTFS has it's advantages over Fat 32.
Some programes do not work with NTFS so get great advise on the 2 subjects before switching to NTFS.
MicroSoft offers instruction on both Fat 32 & NTFS, read up it makes a better BBS poster of you.
    Enjoy!:)
