Did you do a clean install, or a repair?

If you did a repair, there are several products that will read your key from the registry:

    ViewKeyXP

    Everest

    Tweaking Toolbox XP

If you formatted (clean install), none of the tools can get the key and the key is not on the CD.

If Windows XP is retail, contact Microsoft for possible replacement key: How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs and product upgrades, or replace product manuals

If Windows XP is from an OEM, contact the OEM, Microsoft may not be able to help with OEM.

FYI, an "OEM" (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is the company that manufactured the whole computer, such as Dell, HP-Compaq, Gateway, etc.

If you used an XP Installation disc (not a Restore disc) on a home-buit desktop PC then you are hosed. If you have an OEM PC then the OEM's tech support really should be able to help you - even if they issued an XP Installation disc along with the PC.

    All laptops are OEM, naturally.

There is no way around having the code
At the worst you can call msoft
However it will be expensive as they are pushing vista and not xp now
