I was installing a wireless usb networking device to a Windows ME computer and I had to install the universal usb program so that it would recognize the device. But the problem was is that I was w/o my windows me cd, so I got on my other windows me computer and found the UPNPUI file that the windows setup said I needed on the other computer and I put it on a floppy and got windows to use it from there, ( I later to checked to make sure the disk was virus free, according to AVG it was), and then I restarted my computer, and ever since I haven't been able to get it to start again. I start my computer and I get the login menu, and I log in and my McKafee starts unless it already started w/ the login menu, and then I hear that old familiar sound of windows starting and then that is all, nothing. I look at the running tasks and all that is open is explorer. No system tray not anything else besides statmsg or something like that for a while, but it closes (i assume it goes w/ the mcKafee). I started up in safe mode, but I can't run MSCONFIG to see why nothing else is starting up and I can't use SysREstore cause it opens as an unopenable webpage for some reason. I unistalled the Usb thing from add remove windows system communication then usb ... but it still won't work. I unistalled the program associated with the new hardware, but it still won't start up regular. It just shows a blank screen and only explorer is running. What is wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Safe mode!

FIND file you copied from other computer and delete it.

Next control panel device manager remove any unknown devices. Look for question mark.

Remove any and all devices flaged with yellow exclaimation point. "! "

Remove all USB devices and huns "all "!

Check network controllers and remove anything to do with this USB device!

    Reboot, get back to us.

I had already deleted the file and none of the devices were questioned, but I did delete the driver associated w/ the netgear usb network device, but I was on the WINDOWS 98 form and by some turn of fate I ended up reading something about the registry,,, scanreg\restore or something like that, so I tried to do that... in a dos prompt in safe mode, and I accident hit the enter after the \ and it read the registry and MAGICALLY fixed the error, and restarted... the COMPUTER RESTARTED near flawlessly. The problem has been fixed... The network is now up and running. Thank you for all your help.
