What happens when you type this in the Start Search box: shutdown /s /t 0 (and hit [Enter])?

The last one is number ZERO, not letter O.

If that doesn't work, try shutdown /p

both of those took me to "search results in indexed locations" and nothing more.

    Evan

Your URL is for XP - may not apply to Vista

    Geoff

The command appears at the head of the list in Windows 7 - Vista may be different - use the Run box.

If the Run command is not present when hitting the Orb, right click in the Taskbar > Start Menu > Customize and check the box 'Run Command'.

Pete, I realized that but it was the only detailed article that I could find that described a possible solution to the OP's problem.

There doesn't seem to be any shut down troubleshooters that I could find that apply to Vista. :(

I tried these two ideas singly , successively, and then in combination ( untick automatic restart on system failure, and Run command) but no difference found.

This is a 64 bit system a couple of years old, and this is a new problem with it. The only software change - apart from Windows ceaseless flow of updates has been buying a new digital map and adding it to the hard disk database of an installed programme called Tracklogs, and updating that software from v3.12 to v3.14. So I decided to uninstall Tacklogs and see if that made any difference - and it seems to have messed up Shutting Down - I have been at the screen where those words appear for several minutes now. I will leave it for a while and if necessary pull the plug and try and restart in safe mode.

This message is being done on my laptop by the way.

After about 5 minutes it did shut down, and promptly went into reboot. I am now reinstalling that map programme, then I'll try again.

I have reinstalled the map programme and again shut down led to immediate reboot, so it doesn't seem to be anything to do with that.

I am now trying a system restore.

I'm working my way through the info' in Pete C's link , but meanwhile the restoration seemed to proceed but on rboot it gives the message "...did not complete successfully...You might want to try again and use a different restore point... "

I am doing that. The date I have chosen goes back 4 days, and hence before the last Windows update set.

    Hi Geoff,

I'm counting on the experts here to correct me, but, your problem sounds a lot like what the MSBlaster worm (or one of it's variants) causes.

When was the last time you did a thorough Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware scan?

Also, when did the problem first begin? Did you install anything new or update anything?

Nice try, but very unlikely - that dates back to Win XP days and patches were released by MS.

It was characterised by the on screen message in a Windows dialogue box ......
which would appear at any time, not on a user initiated shutdown.

Geoff does not report any such message.

Nope, it works fine on Vista.

That it would open Vista's "Search" doesn't give me a whole lot of 'confidence' in the state of his system

I would start by updating all my drivers, including the latest BIOS.

If that wouldn't do the trick I'd do a clean install.

Me too - don't have a lot of confidence in my system...although it has been working fine for some considerable time before this - maybe I haven't been doing anything which it thinks is challenging !

And no , I haven't had any error messages.

I just have two problems (now)...
    1. When I shut down it immediately reboots.
    2. System restore doesn't complete.

I am just going to try System Restore again, choosing a date over a month ago , instead of trying to second guess what I did recently. And if that doesn't work then operator fatigue kicks in , and I'll just try pulling the plug and leaving it out for a day or two whilst I recharge my own batteries.

I think a clean install is what I'll do- updating BIOS is something I dread after bad experiences in the past . I was coming to the clean install answer myself - its just the hassle with bought software which deters me.( Like Photoshop , where I have to tell Adobe I am uninstalling, else they'll make me buy it again before I can re-install) .

This is one problem I can put off until tomorrow and tomorrow...

    post script ;
I haven't been looking at forums about Windows - should I - if I can - buy Windows 7 and instal that, instead of reinstalloing Vista (64bit) ?

    Advice ?

IMO I would upgrade to Windows 7. If your going to do a clean install then I would buy either Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional. If you still have doubts about Windows 7 then take a look at this, Should I Upgrade to Windows 7.
