Windows Vista Windows Vista: Which Edition Should You Get?

Wow It seems as tho WVHBasic is useless. I just dont see why they would even pass that on to the public. Very helpful, Thank you. I plan on getting a new PC in february so now I know not to waste my time with basic. Premium it is.

Can I ask a simple question - Why ?
The only answer I seem to get from evaluations of Vista is all the cool colors and the neat interface.
It seems that most of tools that are so essential in Vista that you just "cannot live without" are available as simple, free , hardly demanding 3rd party programs.
People get computers to run programs that they need or want .
Not to run operating system - especially for a new interface with a number of cool colors.
The emperor's clothes yet again !!

I have read this post and the link and also other links regarding these new versions. i also agree with visionof posting - why ??? Why 6 different flavors what was wrong with home and pro versions. security was naturally better in the pro version but the home product functionally works with the majority of users even in a home business environment of a pc or 2.

i sell Dell systems to both the home and small business environments but now i dont really know which way to go.

so a simple question what new product is the same as xp home and which one is the same as xp pro.

Nothing is that simple with MS

Roughly, the equivalent versions are Home = Home Premium and Pro = Business/Enterprise

with Enterprise/Ultimate adding

Bitlocker drive encryption
36 UI languages - some simultaneous
Subsystem for Unix based apps
Virtual PC Express

Ultimate adding Windows Ultimate Extras which are at this point I think not well defined.

One big reason for the average user to go to Vista is for security. One big example is that IE7 runs the cache in what amounts to a sandbox.

Of all the infection vectors, IE was always the biggest.

Another is that IE defaults to the tightest security setting - ie, ActiveX opt in. The user can change that in a particular instance, then one click gets you back to the "protected" mode.

And at long last, default logon is limited user.

You're not thinking about the average user who does not have your interest - time - knowledge to buy/gather security apps. Witness the overwhelming interest in security suites - one stop security. If some of that security is in the OS to begin with, the average person is ahead of the game.

Sure, there is the "number of cool colors ", but so what? Tell me what isn't marketed to be The Emperor's new clothes, I think not.

There are plenty of things to be annoyed with in Vista - and that may change, but that's a different matter.

much better understanding now so thank you. have been looking at dells business site where i buy all machines from because of my var status but what i find is there are so far only offering vista basic or vista business. one post i read said basic was worthless in what it has so i guess my best choice here is to always get the business version. unfortunately that adds 99.00 to the system cost. i think dell needs to rethink and make that the vista home premium.

Microsoft site states that Vista Enterprise is not on the Vista DVD with Home/HP/Business/Ultimate. It is a completely seperate entity.
feel like i'm on star trek when I say entity.

 

Folks - have another question. i can still get certain xp system from dell but right now i have a client who is a teenager and big into music downloads and videos. so my question even though i personnally dont usually buy new m.s. op. systems until the first sp is out am i better for this person to get the vista business or stick with xp ??? and would you go with the amd x2 says the 4600 or go with intels dual core 2 ???

Can you get XP MCE? That's what I would do, its tailor made for music downloads and videos and you wouldn't have to fool with the vagaries of the new OS.

CPU question I'll leave to the Hardware quys.

nope i cant get the mce through the business reseller side of things. wouldnt get my discount through the home side of dell.

been pretty impressed with the amd x2's all the way to the 5000 and they are considerably cheaper than the dual core 2 and for the most part most of my clientel are not heavy muti-taskers.

 

Hey, I have a couple of questions. How does BitLocker encryption work and how would it benefit me?

Also, what does Virtual PC Express do?

Finally, I've been running the Vista RTM build 6000 with absolutely zero problems. It has not crashed on me once. Will the final version be an upgraded/tweaked/newer version?

 

In short, BitLocker "locks" your hard drive - so if it's stolen, no one can get the data from it.

Virtual PC Express will allow you to run one Virtual Machine. It's purpose is to provide legacy application support to businesses by using a virtual machine of the OS that the app needs to run properly.

 

I've never used a VPN. How do I set it up? And what do you mean by "virtual machine ".

It's not a VPN (virtual private network) it's a VM (virtual machine). All it is is a program that will run another OS on your current system. For example, I'm running Vista on my system now. In order to answer questions about XP, I've installed a copy of XP on the VM that I have on my system (I'm actually using the MS VM 2007 beta rather than the Express thingie). So, I've got a window that I open that has XP running in it as a separate system within that window.

 

The troubles that Windows gave me are:

Windows Vista Ultimate = Windows XP Professional (without SP1, not to mention SP2)

Windows Vista Home Premium = Windows XP Home = Windows 98 (not SE)

Windows Vista Home Basic = WIndows 95

I dare not to try Windows Vista Enterprise. At least in the next 18 months.

By the way, I serious consider moving from Windows XP Prof SP2 to Windows Vista Home Premium is a DOWNGRADE, not an upgrade!
