I found this forum while googling and found THIS OLD THREAD which may help me but I need some information specific to my computer.

I am suddenly unable to install Vista updates. It's been fine until last week. My computer goes through all the motions and looks like it has installed properly. However once my system reboots and comes back up, the little icon in the system tray and the Windows Update window say that the updates have failed.

I uninstalled Spybot 1.4 and Teatimer, a suggestion I found while googling, but that didn't fix it.

I am looking to do the in-place-upgrade repair install that's discussed on the thread I referenced above.

However, I have some issues unique to my computer. When I purchased my computer from Dell, I purchased Vista Basic. Then I used the Microsoft Anytime Upgrade CD that came with the computer to upgrade to Vista Home Premium. I've had this since Feb 2007 and it's had some issues overall but never with installing updates.

How do I do the in-place-upgrade? Where do I find it? Do I need to get a CD from Dell? If so, Dell will probably give me the one for Vista Basic, but I need Home Premium.

I have limited computer knowledge but have had weird problems over the years that I've fixed through googling and forums like this one and I am awesome at following directions!

Please give me basic step-by-step instructions on how to do this in-place-upgrade or what I need to do to get the necessary pieces.

    Thank you in advance! :)

    Update -

I kept reading online and found out where the updates install and deleted the one that wouldn't install during the auto process Windows\SoftwardDistribution\Download

I deleted it, restarted, and downloaded the particular update KB941469 manually from the Microsoft website and it installed successfully.

but now my Automatic Windows Update keeps thinking that this update needs to be installed. That little icon in the system tray keeps appearing, telling me I have that update to install.

How do I get rid of it? How do I get Vista to realize it's already successfully installed it?

    Thank you.

    Hi Amber,

I have a question rather than an answer. I could not find any update KB941469 at MS Download page. I also have not received any notification of any updates for Vista this month. Am I missing something, or are you referring to a previous month.

    TIA.

Hi Amber. Since that Vista update installed successfully and windows still thinks the update isn't installed then what we have to do is hide the update. :)

    Try This:
    1. Click start
    2. Click All Programs
    3. Click Windows Update
    4. Under where it says install updates click the link that says view available updates
    5. Once you click that link it should bring you to a list of the updates that are ready to be installed
    6. Right click the update that you want to hide and select hide from the menu
    7. Click continue at the UAC prompt

This will have windows hide the update that you already installed so windows won't bug you about it anymore. Also you should delete the contents of C:/Windows/Softwaredistribution/download without deleting the folder itself. I have to ask, are there any other updates that fail to install besides the one you mentioned? Are there any error messages/codes that appear if they fail?
Have you tried looknig in Event Viewer for any specific error messeges? Start< Administrative Tools< Event Viewer?

If you have Windows Updates that still fail to install try this:
    1. Click Start
    2. Click All Programs
    3. Click Accessories
    4. Right click command prompt and choose run as administrator
    5. Type the following in command prompt and then press enter sfc /scannow
    7. Let the process run
    8. When it finishes restart the computer and then see if any windows updates install successfully

Let me know how this all turns out, thanks.

Evan, thank you. I will try that when I get home. I didn't expect a response so quickly over the holiday!

I'll post back with the results - keeping my fingers crossed! :)

    Hi Evan -

Thank you so much. That worked - I was able to successfully hide the update and now it says windows is up to date and the system tray icon went away.

I never had a UAC prompt to click OK (your step #7 above) but windows still thinks it's up to date so I guess that's ok.

I haven't had any other updates fail to install - this was the only (and I hope not the first!) one. This was the first time this has happened.

I'll keep this post bookmarked!! :)
