A couple of weeks ago I have started noticing a nasty trend on my vista: long periods of inactivity (30 seconds to a minute) where the mouse still works but pretty much every window goes into "not responding mode ". At the same time, the usually responsive programs started taking longer to load, particularly at the time the OS is starting and running the startup services.

After trying to defragment the disk with very little gains, updating drivers, scanning my drive for viruses and malware, and checking with a smart program to verify the health of my hard drive (according to HDD life, it is at 92% health), I discovered while using process explorer that a specific svchost from time to time has very high activity, which in turn makes my dual core CPU go into full activity and creates the situation presented before.

This particular svchost is in charge of the following services:
    Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
    Offline files
    ReadyBoost
    Human Interface Device Access
    Network Connections
    Program Compatibility Assistance Service
    Superfetch
    Tablet PC input Service
    Distributed Link Tracking System
    Desktop Window Management Session Manager
    Diagnostic System Host
    WLAN Autoconfig
    Portable Device Enumerator Service
Windows Driver Foundation - Usermode Driver Framework

Another two processes are hanging from the svchost:
    dwm.exe (Desktop Window Manager)
WUDFHost.exe, which apparently uses the ntdd.dll file.

My computer is a dual core, 2 Gb ram using Windows Vista Ultimate.

Any ideas as to what may be going on and how to resolve it?

Thanks in advance for any help on the matter.

It may be caused by some background program. Does same delay happen, when you go to Safe Mode?

Not that I can think of. I've been in safe mode a couple of times (thanks to Kaspersky's antivirus crashing my program into BSoD twice), and I didn't notice any hangups there.

Now the question is: how can I find out which program is causing this, since my only clue is SVCHOST making my system move into a crawl?

One interesting thing I noticed: my CPU activity doesn't even go to 100%, it is just that whenever that particular SVCHOST goes over 40-50% of the CPU activity, my system stops responding.

I'm completely at a loss with this.

    Any suggestions?

That means something in a background in NORMAL mode causes it.
Post your HijackThis log here, and I'll take a look to see, what may be hogging your system.

I found a few entries, which are definitely not necessary as startups:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UnlockerAssistant] C:\Program Files\Unlocker\UnlockerAssistant.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe "
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ehTray.exe] C:\Windows\ehome\ehTray.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Vidalia] C:\Program Files\Vidalia Bundle\Vidalia\vidalia.exe

These two could be removed, unless you really need them:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PivotSoftware] "C:\Program Files\Portrait Displays\Pivot Software\wpctrl.exe "
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DT GWY] C:\Program Files\Gateway\EzTune\DTHtml.exe -startup_folder

How about this one? Do you need this disk image emulator to be on all the time:
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DAEMON Tools] "C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools\daemon.exe" -lang 1033

I guess, you can run this one, as needed, not as a startup. Does it do anything to your system while constantly running?
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Startup Manager] C:\Program Files\Advanced System Optimizer\startUp manager.exe

Now, you can play with the above entries. I don't know, if it'll solve your problem, but maybe little by little...
