My Dell Dimension 4700 recently began to act weird. I'm pretty sure my little bro accidently downloaded spyware, but i'm not too entirely sure. But the PC began first, disabling all administrative privliges, even for the administrator. System Restore was disabled, and soon copy paste didnt work. I was unable to move, delete, or even rename files. Then one day, the computer stopped working. I turned it on and it said that Windows failed to execute correctly, and now its stuck in a neverending loop, the start up window! I don't know how to fix this problem, and this is the 2nd time it happened. If anyone knows how I can prevent this, please help.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

It does sound like malware - not spyware, but your immediate problem is the log on/log off loop, if that is indeed what is happening.

    Can you elaborate on ....
Does this mean that it reaches the log on screen and then reboots? Or what exactly?

If it is the Logon/logoff loop see here ....

    Fix Windows Logon/Logoff loop

It doesnt even make it to the long on screen. It begins up, you know, black background, windows XP, with the loading bar under it, and then it stops, brings up a black scrren, and white letters reading Windows failed.

    OK - that's not a logon/logoff loop.

Your system is seriously compromised either through a hardware problem or through a software problem - there are a number of approaches to this ......

Check out the hard drive using the drive manufacturer's disk diagnostic software - you will need to open the hard drive cover to determine the make of the drive. If it is a Toshiba you are out of luck, otherwise ,,,,,

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

You require the DOS version to create a bootable CD.

If the hard drive checks out OK the next step is to attempt a repair of the OS - AFAIK Dell supply a full OS installation CD with their computers.
