Windows verification failure

I have a friend who is using XP Professional and it was having some serious problems so I installed better software and actually turned on the automatic updates. He didn't even have Service Pack 1! Well, after everything installed Microsoft checked for System verification and it's saying it failed and now there's a message that pops up on the desktop that won't go away. How do I get rid of that?

 

You'll have to contact Microsoft to resolve the issue. It's almost certain that you'll need to purchase a legit license.
