Why could it be that everytime I run the Genuine Windows Validation from the MicroSoft Update site, does it tell me my Windows is NOT a Valid copy. Then it goes on and explains that pirating is illegal and that I should purchase a Valid copy (not the exact words).

I spoke with MicroSoft and after giving ALL the information about my version of XP Pro (serial numbers, UPC etc) I was told what I need to do is send my Windows CD back to them and I could "buy" a "legal" copy for X amount of dollars.

Am I to assume MicroSoft is pirating their own software?? The person I spoke with chuckled, but wouldn't answer the question (hehe). I also couldn't get a answer to my above question.

Does anyone have any idea's?? I'm even wondering if updating Windows has anything to do with it, because after the updates, it is nolonger the same as being newly installed from the CD.....

Then the problem is with software (or possibly hardware) they sold you and I'd make them put things right.

I have a question about this. When you bought this computer, was XP preinstalled? and did you 'Activate' it? or did they?
If they activated it, the question may be how they did it.

XP was preinstalled but I had to activate when I got it home. I also registered my copy aswell. All with no problem.

Also someone has suggested that just maybe the problem could be with the service pack updates. It in a way makes sense to me because when Windows is first installed, it is one way, but then when service pack 2 etc is installed, some things change. Could this be the "problem" (if you want to call it a problem)?????

So the copy of XP on your computer is not the same copy as on your install CD? In other words XP was not installed from your CD. If that is the case you should be talking with the store about the preinstalled copy as Newt suggested.

SP2 is unlikely to be the cause of the problem IMO.

I got pretty much the same response but was allowed to download anyway. Said that having a pre-installed version of Windows may cause problems in the future.

But, heard that the Microsoft team has updated their anti spyware tool and so I went to download it again. Had to go thru the validation process again but this time I got "Thank you for using Genuine Windows." This was from the Download Center whereas the above was from Windows Update.

    Different validation tools used maybe?

EDIT: HaHa on me. I thought they were talking about the Beta version, not the monthly update. Oh well... At least I know I have genuine Windows at the Download Center. For now anyway. :)

XP was installed from th very same CD I left the store with, so that shouldn't be the problem.
However as of minutes ago I went back and tried it one more time... and had no problem this time, everything went as it should've......
